Remember I had a problem with a microwave and baked on grease, a dilute solution of washing soda, clean micro......you must rinse it well though, put a lemon in water in after I had cleaned it incase of any fumes, but it was fine.

I’m glad I started this thread – Please keep posting your Soda Crystal tips.
I’ve been reading up on Soda Crystals and Baking Soda and noted that several sites warn that Soda Crystals must not be used on fibreglass/plastic baths……....
unless you know different.

As a youngster - in the days before 'Washing-up' was invented -
Soda was the only thing we used for washing-up.

Soda crystals aka washing soda is brilliant for getting grease off of stuff, in a strong soluction (with rubber gloves)
Also, tip some down a stinky drain, then follow with a kettleful of boiling water: gets rid of the gunk & the stink.
Soda crystals are great added to laundry, or for soaking something really dirty before putting it in the washing machine
BUT
Do not use soda crystals on aluminium as they will corrode it really badly.
Just try the silver cleaning tip from Pinkwinged, where you add silverware, aluminium foil & soda crystals to very hot water & watch the tarnish vanish in seconds from the silver: but the aluminium foil will almost disintegrate before your eyes!0 -
I clean my oven shelves by soaking in a strong solution of soda crystals and hot water overnight in the bath (my bath is plastic and have never had any problems). In the morning any burnt on stuff wipes off very easily.
I also use it for soaking stained clothes, adding to washing powder for every wash and keeping the sinks clear.:D0 -

So what exactly are Soda Crystals?
Are they corrosive?
Where can they be safely used, for what purpose and in what quantities?
Thanks in advance.

soda crystals are one of the main ingredients for gloop!
i use 1/3 bag to make up my mix (along with 2 grated bars of cheapy soap melted in water)
it's quite caustic so you should try to cover your nose and mouth when handling it and wear gloves too

Curry_Queen wrote:Anyway, following some of the suggestions here, I've poured some down my sink with hot water as it's forever getting clogged and drains away v e r y s l o w l y and previous attempts to clear it with bicarb and vinegar weren't really very successful, not long term anyway. It worked like magic and I've just poured away a bowlful of water and it drained away within seconds instead of the usual 5-10 mins :T
nice tip, i'll have to try soda crystals for this purpose next time
one tip with using bicarb and vinegar, heat the vinegar til it's nice and warm, pour it down the drain then add the bicarb. cold vinegar doesn't work as well for drain cleaning
oh, be careful not to inhale the the hot vinegar fumes (as in standing over the pot sniffing) as it hurts like hell! :eek:founder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0
