Anyone know how to use blackberry in usa

Options
My 12 year old son has gone to the USA he has a Blackberry 8520 but says it wont let him send text messages as he cant get a signal. He is on the Virgin network does anyone know if he needs to change any of the settings on his phone to allow him to use it. Any advice appreciated!

No!!! He has gone with my brother who has turned all the internet settings off (I Hope!) I just want him to be able to text me or ring me if he wants to as he never been away this far before
  • Does he have roaming enabled?

As above, did he ask Virgin to enable roaming before he went ?

If not it's not going to work as it can't be done once the phones left the UK as the sim updates can't get to it as roamings not active ! (catch 22)...

Unless he is somewhere where there is no cellular signal period, Anywhere in the US that tourists are likely to visit will have GSM signal. The most likely reason for the lack of signal, is that roaming is not enabled. He should have been able to roam pretty much anywhere in the US. All this stuff about GSM signal not available everywhere in the US is complete nonsense! If Tmobile signal is not there, AT&T will certainly cover it.

The other option is he may need to search for networks if the phone is set to manual selection and its currently on the UK network. When I'm in Spain I often manually set mine to VF ES to avoid going onto other networks which cost me more.

Obviously he has some way of contacting you because you know he can't send texts. How long will he be gone for? He's with his uncle... relax!! I can bet you he'll be having a ball, phone or no phone ;)
