I give to charities of my choice and resent the tactics undertaken by some chuggers.

Whenever I visit Glasgow (I currently live abroad) to catch up with family/friends I find myself harassed by them. My easy opt out is to smile, apologise and say "I don't speak English" in either broken English or another language. Works a treat every time! They typically smile and say "enjoy your visit" LOL

You'll be pleased to know that the chuggers in Glasgow have had so many complaints about them the council have now restricted the days they are allowed out in the city centre streets. I think it's 3 days a week now. I personally avoid them as much as possible, ignoring them and carrying on walking seems best...and avoid eye contact!

On a recent trip to Glasgow there were two separate areas in the end sauchiehall street and part way down buchannan street which had droves of Red crossers. Just pouncing on anyone who didn't move quick enough. I had one follow me into a shop trying to get me to stop :(

Then also the Army trying to get me to join, and the unfortunate chap who stank of booze, who had an even more unfortunate sister that had been knocked down twice! (once early on in the day as we were walking down Enoch station way, and the second time outside Central Station) He obviously didn't recognise us, I just said Don't bother, you've already tried us earlier on in the day.

Quite an eventful day for a trip to Glasgow.

Yeah it's for that reason they are now restricting the number of days the chuggers are out. Unfortunately there isn't much you can do about the increasing numbers of beggars, drunks... I try and avoid Buchanan St and Sauchiehall St on my way to and from work because of all the chuggers...it's a definite put off for a lot of people visiting the city centre.

I got a phone call from Childline, a charity I have supported in the past when I was working, and I explained I couldn't afford to make any donations as every pound is needed. The guy went on and on and on and I kept saying there was no point in continuing the conversation, he was very insistent I sign up to pay £12 donation as it wouldn't come out of my bank account for another 2 months. I am on about £120 a week so £12 is a huge amount of money for me, and he just wouldn't take no for an answer. Eventually I said 'I am terminating this call' and hung up, then wrote to Childline and they were very good and took my details off the list the agency has who makes these calls. It just irritates the hell out of me though, particularly in the street when they're walking alongside you or yelling down the road after you. I was terribly polite but I am mulling over getting out the F Word Guns at initial point of contact.

Just hang up on them if they ring you. i make a regular donation to the NSPCC but they keep asking for more, not by phone as I am ex directory but by email or snail mail. I choose to which charities I donate, usually when touched by a moving account of someone's experience, a TV charity appeal or through personal experience. I ignore all direct requests.

I was approached by one chugger once and I politely refused. Two seconds later, Im stopped by another one from the same company. Now if I have said no to the first person, why on earth would I stop and talk to the next one? who must have seen that I had already been approached and declined.

I had heavy shopping bags and was dashing for the bus so I was not the slightest bit impressed!

It's not just chuggers that put people off supporting charities. I cancelled my subscription to Diabetes UK after their continual calls and raffle tickets through the post. They ignored all my requests to remove me from their marketing lists.

Dont make eye contact with 'em when you are approaching, or you've 'ad it!! I have also had one following me telling me I have lovely rosy cheeks lol!! But they are a nightmare, I hate walking past them. Baker Street in London used to be full of them, one after the other down the one stretch of road... I would love to know exactly how much the charity gets after all the 'expenses'.
