I dont recommend it and havnt for years

Ha ha - looks like 23n1th was referring to Matousec, actually!

Interesting, though - I gave up on ZoneAlarm back in about 2005 when it blocked connections that it shouldn't have, even when explicitly set up rules to allow the traffic (which should have been allowed anyway). Shutting down ZA made no difference - I had to completely uninstall it and reboot!

I don't know about Comodo's background, and I hate the way it failed leak tests in it's default configuration (I haven't tested this recently, so maybe it's improved), but as I said above, in custom mode with Defense+ off it seems to work as I would want.

I wish there was a better choice of free software firewalls for Windows, though...

^^agreed, compared to anti-virus solutions, the choice is somewhat limited. I just use the default win 7 firewall. :o

I use Comodo because Zonealarm along with a AYG conflict kept killing my internet browsers.

  • I'm fed up with Zonealarm, not sure about the Comodo negative comments - any other suggestions (that aren't called Windows Defender) ?

OnLine Armor (free) is an excellent FW with HIPS functionality to boot. Seems to work very well with little issues with Avast 5.x (free)

agreed, i'd opt for Armor too instead of C.

okay, thanks for that RIK
  • The windows firewall works perfectly for everyone apart from niche users. The only real benefit of a third party firewall is they tend not to be as easily circumvented when the computer is infected by a virus. But then again, if you have a good spyware/malware/av setup, then the windows firewall will be perfect.

I play many games, and have configured a lot of things over many years, applications, games.. with all sorts of weird network requirements. The windows firewall has never stopped me from accomplishing something, or put my system at risk. This is from a cisco guy!

Of course, if you like being told about threats, in a movie like GUI.. then 3rd party is perfect.
