Hi there, just to say I got a cheque back and my tax code changed when I submitted all the info that Martin suggested. Afterwards I told everybody in the same department and they all received cheques back in various amounts, it took a little time but was worth the price of a stamp.
I must admit this was a few years ago and it was done by post not the internet, but we were all chuffed!!!!
Nannyg£1 a day 2025: £90.00/365 Xmas fund0 -
hi sorry if i sound silly
OH has been working for the NHS since 2010
i applied online a few days ago for the tax relief dating back to 2012/2013, it stated on the form i filled out £125 per year flat expenses.
What exactly does that mean? will he get £125 a year backdated or is it only a percentage?
also i was wondering if there was a way of seeing if he already had been getting it? would it say anything on his payslips?
his current tax code is 1112L and next years is 1158L0 -
It's tax relief on the amount claimed so for most basic rate tax payers it would be worth £25/year (£125 x 20%) but it could be worth anywhere between £0 (not earning enough to pay tax) and £56.25/year for very high earners.
Tax code 1112L would suggest he's alread y claimed in the past (standard tax code at moment is 1100L and adding £125 expenses would make it 1125L)
He can log into his personal tax account to check exactly how the tax code is made up - check gov.uk.
Basically I wouldn't be expecting to get any refund based on what you already know0 -
Ok please bear with me as it going to be a bit long winded.
I wear a company branded uniform/PPE most of the time. I do, around ones every 2 months have to go to meetings in a shirt and tie.
Most of my uniform/PPE has to washed by an external contracting company, to keep it flame !!!!!!. However my long-sleeved top and polo shirt has to be washed at home.
Can I still claim my tax allowance for washing this part of my uniform?
From looking at the HMRC website I work in the “Electrical and Electricity Supply sector”. The website states that I can claim one of the following.
a. Those workers incurring laundry costs only. £60
b. All other workers. £120
So if I can claim, which one do I go for.
Thanks for any help.

Are the top/polo shirt logo'd and have you checked your personal tax account to see if you are already getting the allowance (some people on here have surprisingly short memories and forget they already claimed!!)0

Yes the top/polo shirt have logos on.
I am not getting the allowance as my tax code is 1100L.
Hope this helps0 -
So you have logo'd uniform but are stuck between the £60 and £120.
If you told us what additional costs you incur, over and above the laundry, we may be able to make a decision0 -

Sorry Dazed and confused, I think I am been a bit dense.
As in additional costs do you mean, like; mileage allowance, cleaning boots?
Could you give me an example?
Thanks,

I would say you've answered your own question there, doesn't this seem applicable to you,
a. Those workers incurring laundry costs only. £60
And don't forget you don't actually get £60, you are entitled to tax relief on the £60 which will be worth anywhere between £0 and £27 per year (£12 for most people)0
