my wife has worked in the NHS as a health care assistant for 30 years...she has just claimed for the laundry allowance and her Unison subs, using a Unison claim form - and she has had a letter from the tax office, initially refusing her claim,as they weren't sure of her 'nursing duties'.please could she clarify....!
She has written a stern letter back - awaiting the results...
Blooming cheek - she'd have done better to say that she owned Vodaphone or similar, to get a full rebate....0 -
Just tried this as a squaddie and it looks like as usual soldiers get nothing! No free laundry facilities exist for us yet according to the reply I received the MoD have told HMRC that they provide a service. News to my quartermaster!!!0

You would need the basic details of when you started / ceased in the 'uniform' job. Other than that - no real documentation needed.
I assume you paid tax - even on minimum wage - as it's a bit pointless otherwise. As the allowance is a tax offset.
Thanks for this, I did indeed pay tax, and as I only had two uniform shirts and was working in a nursery I must have been washing it 3-4 times a week, so it's worth a shot.
Thanks again for your help:idea: Determined to sort her finances!

I recieved a tax coding notice today saying my tax code will change from 747L to 759L.
I sent a letter claiming for 2010-11 and the current year 2011-12.
Is this correct?
Will I need to do this each year or will it automatically be applied each year?0 -
That's an extra £120 of allowances. if you applied for the basic rate (£60) then that's 2 years. The P2 should be reasonably descriptive?
The allowance will continue automatically whilst you're with that employer. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

He can only claim if his uniforms have logos on them and can't be used out of work. You can buy printer paper on ebay that you can print a logo on and then iron them onto you clothes.0 -

As it's not clear where that is quoted from - not a clue, as it's an inert link. Where is it from?If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

Hi, I sent a letter to HMRC reclaiming uniform tax for the past six years, got a reply today saying my tax code from 6 April 2011 to 5 April 2012 will be 753L from 747L but what about the six years back date? Phoned HMRC which took 20 mins to get through!!! the man siad he would e-mail the department and I should have a reply by the 17th of Feb. I did state in my claim letter that i requested a cheque for the backdated money. Anybody else had dealings in this area!!!!:j0
