Repaying a loan that wasn't mine-help needed!
Hi everyone,
I'm after some advice from anyone that can offer it really. I took out a professional studies loan with Barclays in approximately 2003. the value of that loan was £25000 and with interest the repayment was just over £30000.
I have been repaying over £350 a month for the first year and a half and now it's just under £300 a month.
This loan wasn't for me. My parents asked me to take it out to pay for my brothers medical fees. They promised that I wouldn't need to repay a penny however, I have been making these payments for over 2 years since the repayment started.
I am really struggling, my wage isn't particularly good and I struggle every month.
I want to know if there's anything i can do to get ot of this. I dn't want a ccj against my name or anything as i want to become a solicitor and don't want it to affect me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
ps I have already spoken to my family asked them to take it off me so many times but the answer is always the same-they cant. Unfortunately its in my name : (

The loan is your responsibility. You may have a valid claim against your relatives for the loan to them."If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools"
Extract from "If" by Rudyard Kipling0 -
Yes, I have been told it is my responsibility- wasn't aware of it at the time though. Sorry, your response, might have a valid what?
Thanks for your reply.0 -
Do you have anything in writing from your parents regarding this loan? If you do you can take them to court, if you don't then you are fcuked as I don't think a verbal agreement will stand the scrutiny. What about your brother?0

difficult to understand
on what basis did you take out a professional studies loan in 2003?
what was your situation at that time
when did repayments start?
how many payments do you have to make
what do you earn
why has the amount changed from 350 to 3000 -
no i don't have anything in writing from them, I took their word for it. My dad is named as guarantor.
I was at uni and Barclays were offering professional study loans to those student studying law. My parents opened the letter and asked me to take it out to help them out.
Have asked my brother loads of times, he's a surgeon and says its my dads responsibility as he already gives them money for the house etc.
I work in the legal profession but want to try and ecome a solicitor which is why i don't want anything to hinder that.
The payment changed from £353 to £300 due to interest or somehting- Barclays wrote to me to explain.
To date, I have only managed to pay the interest.
I want to be able to get a property with my partner but i can't cos of this.0 -
And you're still speaking to them? I can't believe a family would go on like that. If your dad is guarantor he must have shown that he had money to pay if you didn't. Why didn't they start paying straight away as promised?0

Your !!!!!!ed as you could default on the load and as your father is guarantor then they will come after him but this will screw your position. You could use it as leverage though.
Your brother says he has paid them the money back or he gave them money for the house how much does this come to and why won't your parents pay you back or help you with the monthly repayments?
You could start a Facebook page with the title "British Surgeon and Parents Screwed me for £25k, harsh I know but there is no love lost when it involves cold hard cash.0 -
if your brother already gives your parents money for the house, why cant he stop doing that and start giving you the money?0
-
if you said the loan was for fees for you on the form, but it wasn't - that's kinda fraud, obtaining money by deception.
therefore it will e uncovered if you take any kind of legal action, and may hinder your career.
if your family are all immoral as they seem to be, you are stuffed.
sorry.Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.0
