Car insurance is a big cost for us. DH has never been other than a named driver on others' policies, and I doubt we'd be able to change that. Its my insurance against divorce

My insurance now, is actually more three times what it was as a new driver, and more than double what it was when I drove the same class of car as an 18 year old.
I find it very interesting that we don't have inreased competition for providing insurance with in EU. A friend once also said he pays very little for his sourced in Pakistan and only available to Pakistani nationals.
Cross EU competition though, really interests me. for example, it proved impossible to get pet insurance sourced in UK to cover us for more than 30 days outside UK. Insurers in other EU countries might well be missing a financial trick here, or we as consumers might be? In any case I'm always wondering why it doesn't get more financial press...like Martin...attention and investigation.0 -
I renewed mine last month, last year it was around £450 for me and the Mrs. This year I got the renewal notice and they wanted nearly £900! When I called them I was told it was because they'd had lots of claims last year, so everyone had to pay more.. sorry.
In the end I hunted around using the guide on the site and got it for £590, that was the cheapest I could find
I have 8 years no claims, married with a little one and will hit to big 'ol 30 next year, it shouldn't be this expensive0 -
We have 3 cars 2 have just been renewed - new policies dropped through the door yesterday - they are about £20 each more expensive than last year.
OH's is a 2 year old Mondeo 2.2D TDCI Edge estate - £357
Mine is an ancient Honda Prelude (1995) 2.3i 4WS - £250 - I have had it since it was about a year old - still love it (especially the dashboard), have never been bored with it and will keep it until it starts costing money to keep going.
We changed insurers last year as mine was costing over £500 a year - the change made little difference to OH's premium and increase of £20 each this year isn't worth spending any time looking for a lower quote.
The 3rd car is an ancient but reliable Micra that OH used for travel to and from work (long commute) - kept the miles down on the decent cars - it's due for renewal in January and has been around a £100 fully comp for the last 4 or 5 years - if it doubles we'll probably give it to one of the kids if they want it.0 -
I renewed back in February, my insurer at the time had increased the premium plus changed the excess from £100 to £500 and removed the no claims bonus protection, so I shopped around.
I eventually got it for the same price elsewhere but with breakdown cover (which I had paid over £100 for last year seperately), legal fees, £100 excess and protected no claims (I have 20 years worth - so get the maximum allowed) AND because I went through Quidco, got £65 cashback!
I drive an ancient 1.7 Astra diesel estate purchased for £461 from Ebay 3 years ago, so worth peanuts now.We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -

Last year, mine was £203. Upon renewal tonight, it's now £364...and that's with shopping around, and picking one of the cheapest. My current insurers have quoted £376, and nothing has changed.
Had a quick look to see what's going on, and there are loads of news articles on the web about massive car insurance rises.
Apparently, this will increase premiums by £2.1bn this year alone, with more set for next year. Average premium now costs £703 a year for comprehensive policies, and over £1000 for third party fire and theft.

People are seeing their monthly payments increase by double (as I have).
Have you renewed yours recently and found this?
To keep on topic: Even less money for houses.
We switched from Zurich to Elephant. Zurich wanted about 600 quid for 2 policies, elephant cost us 450 quid.
No brainer.
Did you try elephant?0 -
I think if I put my Mum on the insurance they might not respond so positively, as she never drove and would have been 98 this year...:(
My mother's 62, had a licence since she was about 20, and never had a single point on it. One, not-her-fault accident. So she's probably a good risk (-:...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

Mine dropped a bit when I turned 30, and the following year dropped massively, when OH did....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

Ours went up....not massively, and hunted about, but having waited for the magic male ''30'' insurance benchmark our insurance was about £30 more expensive on my car...out doing the benefits of getting old
with the increasing costs of insurance. 0 -
