Another hit on the pocket...

Anyone renewed their car insurance lately?

Last year, mine was £203. Upon renewal tonight, it's now £364...and that's with shopping around, and picking one of the cheapest. My current insurers have quoted £376, and nothing has changed.

Had a quick look to see what's going on, and there are loads of news articles on the web about massive car insurance rises.

Apparently, this will increase premiums by £2.1bn this year alone, with more set for next year. Average premium now costs £703 a year for comprehensive policies, and over £1000 for third party fire and theft.

People are seeing their monthly payments increase by double (as I have).

Have you renewed yours recently and found this?

To keep on topic: Even less money for houses.

The EU has ruled against premium discrination on the basis of sex.

If it goes ahead, women's car insurance premiums will increase and men's decrease.

The equal rights brigade will go absolutely mental if women lose out and men get something out of equality :D

So imagine everyone is charged the same - basically for the less risky prices will be too expensive and for the more risky too cheap. The adjustment will drive some safer drivers off the road (priced out) and allow some previously priced out more dangerous drivers to afford to drive. Net result roads will be more dangerous and more people than otherwise will die.

    Oh well.

  • Mine was renewed about 6 weeks ago, and was pretty much the same - about £280, £5 or so more than last year.

mine was more expensive about £60 around 6 months ago - that's because i had it as parked on the drive overnight.
by changing it to being parked on the road it was £20 cheaper - all very weird.

it definitely is worth playing around with the options.

putting your mum as a named driver is always a good move for your car insurance premium - always seems to work for me...

April for mine, was about the same I think. OH's actually dropped but we are on a car hunt so no doubt a change in car will send premium soaring.

Mine came back with a quote of about double when I changed my car some months back, so I tried to get it cheaper and nobody else was cheaper, so I phoned them and lied that others were cheaper and I managed to get a little bit of a deal and some cheap breakdown cover.

Not sure how much it is now ... guessing about £260, fully comp, no claims protected, breakdown cover, not garaged.

    Except you're wrong.

The EU Gender Directive rules against the discrimination on the basis of sex UNLESS it can be proven that sex is a factor where risks may be different.

    And i quote:

    "
Court of Justice of the European Union
    PRESS RELEASE No 93/10
    Luxembourg, 30 September 2010

Directive 2004/113 also in principle prohibits sex from being taken into account as a factor in calculating insurance premiums and benefits in respect of insurance contracts which were concluded after 21 December 2007. However, a derogation2 is provided for in the directive which allows Member States to permit sex-specific differences in insurance premiums and benefits in so far as sex is a determining risk factor and that can be substantiated by relevant and accurate actuarial and statistical data. ."
