I don't know how old the OP is, but they have increased the 'young driver' age from below 25 to below 30.. this put my policy up 156 this year

But at least you have an extra five years of being young. You will wish you were still young when you are over 30.

Yeah, slightly frustrating but not the end of the world, having spent the past 7 years paying insane premiums due to being under 25, then the year I hit 25 they change the bracket to 30, haha. Oh well, sods law eh :cool:0 -

Over 30 it does.
Well, yeah. While I tend to agree with you, it does have some impact in certain circumstances. For example, my Mother drives a Range Rover Sport and they will no longer insure me on it until im 30. (The current insurer, im sure others might).0 -
The weird and not so wonderful world of car insurance underwriting will always remain a mystery to me. Our son passed his test at 20 and got his first car at 21. I insured the car with him as named driver, and kept to that arrangement for two years. After that, he took out his own insurance, with me as named driver. Naturally, the premium rocketed.
At age 25, he moved back in with us for a while so we were all at the same address again. His premiums had dropped year by year but still made my eyes water when renewal became due. Talking to a friend -- a retired insurance broker -- he asked how many named drivers there were on the policy. I told him: just me. Better add your wife to the policy then, he replied.
So I did. Both of us have a clean no claims / no convictions record, though I couldn't for the life of me see what that had to do with my son's insurance. But it did. With two named drivers on the policy, the premium now quoted was down by almost 20%.
Although my broker friend said it was all to do with the way the insurer calculated risk, I still couldn't understand the logic: my son was insured for *commuting* and leisure, so what the heck the insurers imagined we were doing when he was using the car every day, I've no idea. Unless it's thought named drivers take younger drivers to and from work?
I've since heard other tales -- perhaps apocryphal, I don't know -- of young drivers having not one but three named drivers: mum, dad, and in the case I was told about, elder sister. Whether that's true or not, I do know that in our case, having two, er, 'mature' named drivers on the actual young driver's insurance policy did make a significant difference to the cost. But I still can't fathom why. . .0
