I think you have hit upon a major issue with this website. Money making is just the other side of the same coin as money saving.
Many companies will have goals to increase margins/profit as well as increase revenues/turnover. The same should be the case for peoples finances.
If there was a little more aspiration on the MSE forum and a little less jealousy towards high earners I think that there would be more advice from some of the more reserved posters on here.0 -

Don't the two go hand in hand? Most wealthy people (not saying everyone on this forum is wealthy mind) probably keep the mantra 'look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves' quite close by, even when they have made their money. You get decent salaries in life through sensible planning if you think about it logically.
On a related note, my friend lives near a very run down shopping centre. He made a comment to me that he couldn't understand how he would always see such poor people all taking so many taxis - how did they afford them? The answer is pretty logical really, I don't take taxis very often as they are expensive, hence I become more wealthy. If you're poor then you might not manage your money very well, don't think things through and end up spending money you don't have on taxis.0 -
I will take home approx 12 grand this year, I used to earn more than double that for less hours.
The thing is, I am now in a job I really love and the hours mean that I am home at "normal" times and am able to spend time with my family.
TBH we are really struggling financially, but we just about manage, you have to cut your cloth accordingly.0 -

Now I think about it, I am not really sure. I think it was based on the idea that people with high salaries got more leeway on what to do with their money. But I am honestly stuck by the fact most posters that are willing to post their salary in this thread earn higher than average earnings.Rainmaker_uk wrote: »If there was a little more aspiration on the MSE forum and a little less jealousy towards high earners I think that there would be more advice from some of the more reserved posters on here. Most wealthy people (not saying everyone on this forum is wealthy mind) probably keep the mantra 'look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves' quite close by, even when they have made their money. Yes, I can understand that. The trouble for me that I am stuck in rut. Earning enough income for my job and life and yet very unwilling to leave it since I can manage and save on my income. Even enough to contribute a private pension of my own.I may be poor by some standard but I manage.
I am not good at explaining my points, thus I tend to lurk.0 -

Do you like your job? If you do then you sound like you're sorted really. Who cares if you're 'poor' compared to others? If you're happy and have enough for now and the future then I wouldn't worry about it.0 -

In Jan the VAT is going up to 20% so on top of reduced average wages and higher unemployment, it looks like hard times are coming for many.0

Despite my income most of my spending is on zero vat (food, children's clothes) or low rate (domestic energy) items which should not be affected.I think....0

VAT will hit us significantly. But it seems ''fair'' so...we'll suck it up and prioritise.0
