HDMI cable - how much to pay for one?

Done a search and was surprised this has not been covered.

Sister a new HD TV and a blue ray player. Need a HDMI cable to connect them.

She is just a casual viewer and not one of those who demand the best. She just want a quality cable at a decent price. Not keen to pay £30 etc for a cable. Naturally the cheaper the better

Have read a report ages ago which stated that lower priced HDMI cables were as good as those costing £30+

Any recommendations which cable to go for?

Have noticed some cable description give a cable spec and some say it is PS3 compatible. I assumed all HDMI cables were wired the same way, only differing in the material, plating and shielding used.

If you're buying from Poundland don't pay more than ..... a pound. I bought a couple a bit back but haven't tried them yet as still on CRT tv.

edit: I've seen them in HB as posted above.

Not been covered? crubbs, I remember an extensive thread about his not long ago.
General consensus is/was, digital signal is..er..digital, 0s and 1s, they either pass down the cable or don't, rubbing a £1 cable in snake oil doesn't make it worth £50.

..so..cheaper the better

I'm not an expert, and lots of people on here will be able to guide you better but....the theory goes, as you're transmitting a digital signal, you pretty much either receive it or you don't. So the cheap compared to the expensive may not really be that different.

My opinion buy the cheap 99p one, it will have the same quality picture as a £30 one, but due to build quality might fail quicker, but for 99p I'll go buy another.

This might help as it depends on what your Tele is pushing. The damn boxes talk to each other these days and negotiate "link speed" based on the cable you plug in. So with a cheaper one you might not get full 1080i

This category difference in HDMI cables surfaced with the introduction of HDMI 1.3 - which defines two cable categories:
Category 1-certified cables - tested at up to 74.5 MHz (720p60 and 1080i60), and
Category 2-certified cables - tested at 340 MHz (1080p60 and 2160p30). Later in October 2008, Category-1 HDMI cables started to be marketed as 'Standard' while Category-2 HDMI cables as 'High Speed'.

So it depends on what the TV can support really. But if she is truly unaware of the differences then any will do.

Get one for less than a 5er. As people have said they're all much of a muchness. Gone are the days when companies should get away with charging crazy money for gold plated cables
