But are still very liable to lose data if anything goes wrong in practice .

Also wrong, in fact it is rather hard to get a Nokia phone to wipe everything off and revert it to the day it was purchased! :s

Dead easy done it enough times .SOFT RESET: *#7370# will delete everything on your phonememory (contacts, sms, mms, mails etc)
Built enough Nokia firmware Roms myself to not be an ignorant user and in each case have deleted existing data before flashing the rom .Also seen enough poster elsewhere who have lost data on a Nokia . Factory reset bang bang takes seconds .

My advice is to back up no matter what phone or you may pay the price even if you dont think you will .

Many Nokia phones have UDP, doing an upgrade (or even a *#7370# - if your handset allows it) will not delete your personal data and customisations.

But its common sense to do regular back-ups or sync your handset on-line or to your PC.

Haha - I know exactly what you mean. I've had two S60 Nokias that no matter what you do never work the same way as they did before.

Some things just stop working. No way (no matter how hard the reset you apply is) to get it to behave as it did previously.

BTW some Nokia upgrades do wipe the phone or corrupt your data (possibly due to implementing different internal representations of the same data as before) - depends on how major a release it is. Always back up before flashing.
The thanks button is here to the right. If you find a post saves you money, gives you useful information, or you agree with it, take a second to thank the poster! :)

    Many Nokia phones have UDP

Thats the key many as in new models but not all .Even UDP is not 100% safe likewise data on memory card easy to corrupt .

  • I'm very ignorant about such matters and this thread has alarmed me a bit. I have an iphone 3GS. Should I be wary when updating? How do I back up contacts etc?
