Tonight I plugged in my Sony Ericsson X10 to my computer to download a video. On doing so I was prompted (by PC Companion) to do a software update to the phone. I went ahead and PC Companion went through the various steps of the update.
When completed I switched on the phone and EVERYTHING - and I mean EVERYTHING has gone. All my CONTACTS (some of which I will never get back), all my MESSAGE THREADS, all my PICTURES, all my VIDEOS, all my AUDIO files, all my APPS that I've spent the last few months downloading - F***ing EVERYTHING!!!
I rang Sony Ericsson support and they said "Oh yeh it does that. You'll have been warned about that before you ran the update". Now I can't recall having seen anything warning me of this and I can guarantee there would have been nothing that looked like a warning message because I'd definitely have read and acted on it.
Basically what the support girl told me is that if you do an update to the phone's software (which PC Companion will prompt you to do) then ALL your stuff will be lost. She told me that the only way to avoid this is to run a backup of the data prior to running the software update. Unbelieveable!!!
I find it astonishing that Sony Ericsson would sell a high end product like this which is so easy to wipe of data.
I had 20 years worth of contacts and they've all gone. I just can't believe it. Gutted is an understatement.
My advice... Do not buy Sony Ericsson - simple as. Not if you value your contacts, message threads, pictures, videos, apps, etc, etc, etc.

I do recall the warning, says to back up the handset before performing the operation.
20yrs of contacts and you only have them all stored on 1 device?

You'll lose all data when performing a software upgrade with any make of phone. And you do get a warning, I've done updates with the X10 Mini before. In fact, it even warns you you may lose data with you do a factory reset.Have I helped? Feel free to click the 'Thanks' button. I like to feel useful (and smug).0

yeh you lose all your contacts when doing a software update or a factory a reset or even if us end your phoine off for repair! you say you had 20 years of contact why did you not save your numbers to your simcard and not the phone? sirely somenumbers would be on the sim as the x10 is like 6 months old0

Did your contacts not sync with your GMail account?
I have all my contacts on my Android phone sync'd with an Exchange server.0 -
It always amazes me that people don't keep regular backups of theis personal data. Its so quick and easy nowadays. What would you do if your phone was lost?0

The X10 software prompts you to install the backup app before you update. You must have skipped it.
I did mine the other day and it worked fine.0 -
Nokia handsets retain everythin
But are still very liable to lose data if anything goes wrong in practice .

After over 25 years in IT, it always puzzles me why people don't "read the manual" or take time to see what the steps are when making changes/updates to any form of technology.
I would say to the OP that if they can use Google to find this site, then they could have spent 10 minutes checking on line to see if any problems could arise.
It is NOT the fault of SE or any other phone manufacturer if they give out information and nobody reads it before charging ahead. Equally, again after many years' experience, only an amateur or missionary would apply Windows patches without seeking comment from the Internet as to what the side-effects are.
However, the OP's misfortune may help prevent another MSE member falling into the same trap, so thank you for the reminder.0 -
the other thing is windows fatuige , It happen with android and other operating systens . people see the word "update ,or task manager" and thing it works the same as windows .
Then get surprised when it is different.
I found when i had my x10 it was a good phone .0
