There is another post on here i read yesterday sofa from furniture village and one poster gave some great information regarding bycast leather which is leather dust which is i presume sprayed on then a coat of plastic over the top you should read his post its very very interesting, companies are using the term real leather even when its just dust they use and its against the law.
What a load of nonsense. True bycast leather isn't "leather dust" as you call it. It simply is split leather withe a layer of polyurethane glued to the upper surface. And fo the record, most, if not all tanned hides will contain waxes and tanning sustances that'll likely melt on burning.
  • Thanks Purple and Neil.

You've educated me, and yet brought me right back to being paranoid without evidence. For what its worth, it looks completely fake and smells like plastic and looks like a jacket I used to own.

I'm not sure if this is correct, but my understanding was if something is sold as leather it has to have the symbol? I don't know if this is true or even the case with part-leather.

I sent an email and asked for confirmation on receipt, which they supplied. So reasonable time to respond, stated 14 days, I'm going to proceed with a durability case and possibly rattle them with the leather issue.

I'll keep you up to date..

Where did you buy it from?
  • It was bought from cfsfurnitureltd. Its actually a cheap sofa, which I was aware that it might not last too long, but I accept that, as I only needed it for between 6-24 month. 5 months is too soon for it to fail.

Watch your comments! It is you who is talking nonsense. By-cast leather is illegal to sell in the UK under the description of "leather". It is a man-made material. Small particles of leather (not a split of hide)! are glued together by some foul-smelling revolting glue, and covered by a thick layer of disgusting plastic. It is man-made material, nothing to do with genuine leather. It has no durability, it is sold by a meter (do cows come in rolling meters?)
By-cast sold by Furniture village was consisting of at least 50% thickness of the coating, and the rest - leather-dust-particles. By the UK law, anything that has a coating greater than 30%, must not be called leather. Also, anything that does not contain a piece of hide (not little particles, but a proper layer), cannot be called leather either. In 2009 there was a big case with Trading StandardsvAgency against FV, after which FV were forced to stop calling their by-cast chairs leather.
If a local rogue trader sells a PU jacket as leather, the police would imprison the conman (if you google, you will find criminal cases with people prosecuted for obtaining money by deception by the way of selling non-leather as leather). Clearly, there may be a cause for a criminal investigation. Do contact the police (better in writing ) and insist on registering your case as criminal offence by FV. They (FV) by now are well aware of their by-cast and know that they should recall all the rubbish they sold as leather.
You will get your refund - no doubt - but try to get them behund bars - as knowingly selling non-lkeather as leather is a VERY serious matter!!!!

If you take a swatch sample (do not tell FV that you cut it off!), have a look under a microscope if possible. It is better test than burning. And do keep the swatch! Do not give your item away for FV "testing"!!! It would disappear with no recourse! Your item is your evidence! Demand FV to obey by the decision by an independent specialist and to pay for the testing if found not leather!!!
In the internet there are materials about British standard for leather. Find it.

Kids getting stabbed on our city streets is a VERY serious matter. Hundreds dead or missing following a tsunami is a VERY serious matter. Selling plastic or munged up leather as leather is an annoying infringement of consumer law and/or regulations.
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.

Its described as eco-leather which is not illegal and is made from scrap leather. The bonding process will burn, but this does not mean the sofa has been mis-described.
It is however unacceptable that the sofa has only lasted 5 months so this shoud be the basis for your claim.
There is a large eco-leather manufacturer in peterborough so if it was illegal then they would not be there. There may be another method which is illegal, this dust thing thats been mentioned but i can't comment on that as I have no knowledge of it.
