Hi, we just got back from Amsterdam on Tuesday & had a fantastic time at the Convent Hotel, booked through hotels.com
    http://www.accorhotels.com/gb/hotel-1159-the-convent-hotel-amsterdam/index.shtml
It cost about £100 per night for a double ensuite. Fantastic location, 10 mins walk from Centraal station, very close to red light district, Dam Square, Anne Frank - trams stop outside the hotel - everything we wanted and they kept the luggage for us the day we left.
If you're travelling from Schipol the trains run every 10-15 mins from very early to very late and take under 20 minutes to Centraal station. It costs 3.70 euros for a single. If you have coins you can buy your ticket from a self service ticket machine which is very easy to work - I couldn't find a slot for notes though and it didn't recognise my debit card (could have been me tho!). If you use the manned ticket office windows they charge you a whole 50cents per ticket extra!
I would definitely stay at our hotel again. I wouldn't stay at the airport - it was great to be so central. HTH and you have a great time!

At Schipol most (but not all, so look around if there is a queue at the ticket office) of the ticket machines take credit cards.

I would agree that the central hotels in Amsterdam are often much more expensive. The tram service is very good if you can stay a little further out.

I stayed in the Okura Hotel (5 star) and got a very good deal through Hotel Connect. The hotel may upgrade you if it's a special occasion and you let them know in advance. i took my parents for their wedding anniversay and the hotel upgraded us (both rooms) to executive rooms on the executive floor - an upgrade of 2 room grades. Might be worth a thought?
  • If you are interested in the bars and clubs recommend staying in Leidseplein not Dam Square

    More jumpers and jeans!;)

Seriously though, it can get really cold and I am pretty resilient to extremes of weather. I suspect you will be wanting to do a lot of exploring on foot and depending on when you go there, just be aware that it can get cold.
lol, i shouldve said for a night out, not at night hehe ;)
