Could i suggest you try the SAS Hotels web site ? they often have some good deals at the SAS hotel next to the Dam Square , on the Damrak .
We got room there for 50% cheaper than any other hotel offers web sites , worth a try as the hotel is A! !
If you stay at an hotel at the airport trains and buses run 24 hours a day with good late night /early morning runs as well !
Must really say to you , the cheap hotels in amsterdam are cheap for a reason ! they are rubbish ! go for the best you can afford even if a bit above what you expected to pay !
thanku. having a look right now, theres so many hotels there and so many bad reviews for every one, its so difficult! :j

thankyou, i might consider this, but is it expensive to get into centre? and how often is bus/train etc? what about late at night/early in morning, incase we have a loate one? thankyou :)

A Schipol - Amsterdam return is around 4.5 - 7.5 Euros depending what ticket you buy but it averages about a fiver return which is not too bad and the trains run very frequently.

EycplUK is right - be careful as the old adage 'you only get what you pay for' rings true - certainly in Amsterdam.

Something to bear in mind as well - it can get VERY cold -probably something to do with being at or below sea level. Make sure you have some warm clothes with you just in case.

You will enjoy the place I am sure, but it is a little pricey since they converted to the Euro so something to bear in mind.

just come back from amsterdam on wednesday we stayed at the frisco inn very close to the red light district cannot fault the hotel we paid 70 euros for the night which was ensuite the room was small but clean and you can leave your luggage with them until its time to leave
  • If you are going midweek you might get a good deal on one of the 4 or 5 star hotels in the centre. The Krasnapolsky is in Dam Square and very nice and anything under £100 a night would be a very good deal. The 2 & 3 star hotels are cheaper but a lot smaller but they can be very well located. If you want to do the art museums then choose a hotel near there, if you want to do the red light district then Dam square would be good. Try this website
    booking.com

Staying at the airport would save you money but you have to offset against convenience.

we stayed in the nadia hotel earlier this year, 70 euros a night b&b for the 2 of us, nice and clean and reasonable if on a budget, the dam is quite expensive no matter what you do ;-)
10 min walk to dam sq.
check trip advisor before booking anywhere

thankyou, i was all ready to book there until i saw a review that says it has bed bugs and very steep stairs, now i know a lot of hotels have that there, and i was even going to ask them about the 1st floor but the bed bugs thing really put me off :(

we have just got back from a 3 night break and stayed in nh barbizon
it is a 5 star hotel 2 mins from central station
we found it to be not 5 star (apart from the lobby) but a very good 4 star
clean with large comfortable rooms - all the goodies you would expect mini bar bathrobes slippers etc
i would recommend you email ahead as i did and request a room with a view
we had a smoking room witrh windos that you can open and a view over amsterdam
    we paid £60 a night
this was on the name yuour own price part if you are not familiar with priceline
    hope this helps
tip ; if you are thinking of going to the anne franke house book online and print out tickets and avoid a hug queue - we just walked straight in!!
  • If money's tight, I'd definitely recommend trying name your own price on priceline. I got another NH Hotel in central Amsterdam - had change from £50 and it is a decent 4* standard. I think there's a guide to using this on the site.

Otherwise (or if this doesn't work) how much are you wanting to spend? You'll get some bad tripadviser reviews for almost anywhere. If you want the best hotel for your money without going through priceline, staying at the airport (or a nearby town) could be the best bet. You should be able to get somewhere decent enough near the centre, though.

    More jumpers and jeans!;)

Seriously though, it can get really cold and I am pretty resilient to extremes of weather. I suspect you will be wanting to do a lot of exploring on foot and depending on when you go there, just be aware that it can get cold.
