Question about changing email account because of spam.

My account is virtually impossible to use now because of too much spam so I am looking to use a new account. I have been pointed in the direction of using something like an underscore as the spammers dont like it so much.
On yahoo if you open a new account you can transfer everything over to the new account with just one push of the button but would that also include all the spam and therefore the spammers would still get me in the future? What would be the best way for me to do the transfer rather than just transferring one address at a time and hope that I dont miss any.
Also does anyone know of a users group that discuss these problems. I have not been successful at finding one on Yahoo.

  • I have changed my email address today for the same reason I`m with tiscali you can import/export your address book to the new address, sorry I dont know much about yahoo, there are a lot of folks in here who will guide you,if I get stuck I just put my question into "Google" and always get the answer I want.

  • I use Yahoo and have had the same address for about ten years. 99.5% of the spam goes into the Spam folder and I never see it.

Changing your address sounds much more trouble than clicking the 'This is Spam' button a couple of times a day.

The problem I find is the other way round in that I have to check the bulk folder as often genuine emails gets through otherwise I would not be concerned.
  • Ah I see. I don't usually find that a problem. Does clicking the 'This is NOT Spam' button help?

doesn't seem to and I dont want to take the chance on missing an important email.
  • Is this a particular problem with Tiscali or is there a general increase in Spam around. I ask because I have one email account with Tiscali and 3 with Clara and am getting masses of spam which never used to be the case. I have several layers of protection which I keep up to date but doesn't seem to change anything. Don't want to go to yahoo or Hotmail as they take that much longer to load up (am on a very slow dial up). Interested in other peoples experience.

Same problem here - we are with Yahoo and for the last couple of weeks we have been getting the most vile spam emails coming through. Our security is up to date but would appreciate any advice on how I can stop this. I have a 14 year old who uses the laptop and really don't want her coming across this filth (84 of these received in just two days) - it is driving me round the twist.Any advice gratefully received.

I had the same problems and switched to Google mail - absolutely brilliant! 2Gb of storage, spam filter etc. Completely free and if you send and receive via Outlook - no adverts either! Also you can take it with you if you change ISPs. If you would like a Google mail address send me a PM with your current email address and I will send you one. (and anyone else) You can then say goodbye to spam!

I ended up solving this problem ny signing up to a premium email service, runbox.com. Admittedly, not cheap ($49/year) I have good web access and POP access, the web interface works well on dial-up. It also comes with a very good trainable SPAM filter and by clicking "this is" or "this is not" spam it becomes very good very quickly.

You can also have upto 10 email aliases working on the same account. So you only log in to one account, but you will receive email from any of the aliases and can write from any of the aliases - so if your address is mainaddress@runbox.com you can create and aliases of personalemailname@runbox.com junkexamplename@runbox.com and cancel one alias if it becomes over-run with spam without cancelling your account of your other email address. Some people find this method a good way to avoid spam.

Thanks for all your replies. I will look into them. I tried going google but I didn't find it easy to complete the process. I will have another look.
