Not fit for purpose - Maplins runaround

No he didnt want Dj-style headphones, he wanted dj-ing headphones.
Studio headphones are the ones that are thick with a straight cable.
Not sure what you mean about "major clubs" as many of them at the moment are hovells due to mangers not wanting to shell out on refurbs. Most things now are "major events" in clubs that used to have a "major name"
He does get seinheisers, he doesnt like technics, and he spends various amounts from £50 to £150 on headphones.
All the DJ's we know use coiled headphones, without exception.
He uses his own pioneer mixer at home, and generally the bigger bars and clubs also have pioneer mixers.
My point is, if you say I need this this and this, and the shop confirms that the item has these features, which you cannot see or read on the packaging, and also tells you that you can return them if they arent right but then changes their mind as soon as you try too, something is seriously wrong.
I would like to point out that he most certainly is a proper dj, and not a bedroom dj and has worked for MOS, warmed up for tongy in his early years, stood in for him in Ibiza (behind a screen when tongy got some stomach bug) done many seasons abroad in big clubs, was resident in mint club, has done love to be etc.
Sometimes DJ's dont know their "jack size", some of them can be a bit daft like that. Even tiesto has !!!!!!ed up by not checking his cd burned right b4 playing it. If I asked my partner now, he wouldnt recall which size jack he needed, but would be able to show someone which one it was, and I dont think the thickest of people can think that by saying "a big plug" he actually meant the smallest one!
I would never say maplins were entirely useless, Ive never had issue with them before. He asked for a number of specifics, none of which were fullfilled by the advised purchase, if they had showed him the proper DJ phones, he would have undoubtedly taken them if he knew the difference between the two, ie jack size etc.
The packaging and the staff were misleading and maplins are blaming skullcandy because they say skullcandy have mislead them!0 -
Is there any news on this then0

Any DJ worthy of the title know jack sizes! I am not a DJ but do understand headphone connections. Is he really a DJ or a wannabe? What age is he? How much experience does he have/and where?
Care to give his name so we can check him out?0 -

yes my personal opinion of a dj is someone who knows what hes does doing as well as knowing what size he needs to headphones and other equipment (esp since he apprently worked for MOS and warmed up for tongy, was it the coffee he warmed up), maybe im wrong and djs dont operate like this0 -
I guess the most difficult thing to prove would be that the headphones were not fit for purpose.
It's not unheard of to use a jack converter, and if you plug the headphones in you get sound. they're fit for purpose as headphones even if you're a DJ. they might not be GREAT DJ headphones, but I'm sure the court would look at the price paid vs more commonly used DJ headphones.
It'd be a difficult case to win.0 -
Sounds like Maplin are being complete pillocks about this.
Quite apart from any bickering about terms, jacks, that's obvious or not, the OP's OH seems to have been clear about what he needed (if he was talking about DJing at the length suggested by the OP there can not have been any doubt that he wanted phones for work and not DJ-style for his mp3 player. None!)
He was told by two people that he could exchange them if they were not suitable when opened, and then told he couldn't after he opened it.
In short, they lied to him.
As for "fit for purpose" - that's probably going to be tough.
As a rule, you should treat all sales people like they are intentionally lying to you. As such - get any promises IN WRITING and if you've asked for an item for a particular job (like professional DJing) get it written that it's suitable on the reciept.
The headphones were clearly mis-sold as being suitable for DJ work, but proving that will be a nightmare when it comes down to "he said, she said".
Future reference: get it in writing.Everything looks better from the seat of a bicycle.0 -
Just had a thought.... does SOGA even apply in this case?
OP's OH has bought these as a business item... I presume it's a business item if he gets paid to DJ.0 -

Thing is a could a sell you a cheap set of head phones from the pound shop an claim there for DJing use and they wouldn't be miss sold as you could use them for Djing.
Just as these headphones can be used for DJing, What the problem is that the op bf have selected a pair that didn't have the features the Op wanted but it sounds like the Op bf really didn't know what he wanted.
Saying headphones are DJs headphone is just marketing talking. You need to look at the item your buying range of features, check a few reviews, see where there cheapest. If you make impluses purchases all the time then of course your going to be dissatisfied with the products you'll choose.0 -
Just an update for the more spiteful of you on here who seem to be intent on "proving" he's not a real DJ, although quite why Im bothering....
http://www.djstevejames.co.uk/downloads.html
He's done 5 seasons abroad but stopped due to having children.
He's worked all over the UK. He's been Dj-ing for about 15 years.
He used to use the same shop for all his stuff, they are specifically an audio shop and he just goes in and tells them what he wants, they show him what they have, and he confirms that is what he's looking for. Just like he did with Maplins......
For those of you trying to assist me instead of just being narky :
I have recieved an email back from the maplins website for a question I asked "are these suitable for Dj-ing or for MP3 players only" and recieved a reply stating they are for MP3 players!0 -
