1st i'm not sure if this should be in this section, but just didn't know where to post it.
We have a landline and we are x-directory,
but i keep getting calls for someone called 'paul'
i get no other name, just a 'can i speak to paul please' sometimes it's a english voice other times indian.
these calls are now coming in daily between 10-15 calls, and this is when i'm in at tea. during the day there are about 4 or 6 calls.
i always say 'there is no paul here, never has been, and that paul has given you a wrong landline number'
Not sure if they believe me though.........but it's true
everyone who rings up tells me that they will take him of the system, and i know it's not the same company that is ringing for him, as 1 lad told me, that pauls number (mine) will have been passed around to lots of companies, and they will be trying to contact him, this lad also said that they have a mobile for him (hm will it be his number though) so i asked this lad to contact him via mobile, and tell him i'm pooed off at this.
I now answer the phone with, 'if it's paul your looking for, then he has given you a wrong landline number, please contact him on the mobile number he has given you, and tell him the lady who's landline number he has given out is p***ed off'
some of the numbers are witheld, some come up on my phone, and all are linked to credit companies.
I know because i've looked at say no to 0878, but the address they have for him, is not my home address, as i've asked a few of them to check, and they all say, no that is not the address we have for him.
How can i stop these calls, as they are now becoming a pain in the backside.
thanks

My business used to get lots of these phone calls from India and places like that. One day I just told them in no uncertain terms they were talking codswallop, though a bit more explicitly, though their understanding at the other end was meant.
They have since ceased to ring me in 5 months.0 -
In that situation with 10-15 calls a day, I'd be changing my phone number.0

You can register your number with TPS, that will cut them down (but not the international ones) Its odd they are asking for him by first name, and not Mr Whoever, is he giving this number to friends?
Have you had the landline long? We moved a year ago, and got a new (recycled) number, and we are always getting calls for the previous owner of the number (who didnt live at this address) Again they are usually international numbers calling, so not covered by TPS. Being exdirectory does not help with telephone spam, as some companies use automated number systems.0 -

It's a common ploy of debt collectors, they think they can fool you by making out they're a friend/family/colleague, if they are chasing you you're more likely to give yourself away if they ask for you by your first name than if they ask for Mr Smith.0 -
My business used to get lots of these phone calls from India
To be fair the majority of them i'd say 75% of them are english speaking people when they ring.Have you had the landline long
We have had this number now for about 8 years, and never had any problem. In that situation with 10-15 calls a day, I'd be changing my phone number
I do find this unfair, as i'm ex-directory but i do have family and friends home and abroad who ring me on this number.
It's now 17.00pm and i got in from work at 16.10pm and i've had 2 calls for Paul, 1 was female and other male asking for him. I don't receive any of the silent calls.
1st number was, 01792 311560
google came up with this.

2nd number 01296769989
google came up with this

another number, but i've managed to get his surname of her, as i asked her which paul she wanted,
then i told her the same i tell everyone else.
01204677601

TPS will not stop phone calls that originate from overseas. (That is of course one of the reasons so many dodgy companies now have overseas call centres).
You could play along to try and find out if the compoany is UK based or has any sort of subsidiary/parent over here. If so, you can require them to stop. You could also make a complaint to ICO under DPA, and that will eventually take effect. I had to do this recently in order to get rid of one particularly obnoxious company.
Is your number reallocated? If so, the previous user may have been on a lot of databases. Some companies can start calling after a lull of several years."Never underestimate the mindless force of a government bureaucracyseeking to expand its power, dominion and budget"Jay Stanley, American Civil Liberties Union.0 -
Thanks for the replies, but how can i find out the company names.
I only got the phone numbers because they came up on my caller id, and when i phone 1471 they are there.
Would they be overseas companies, like i said 75% of them speak good english.
I only got Pauls surname tonight, because i blagged her, and asked which paul she wanted to speak to, and she gave me his surname, which is very unusual, so much that i've search on facebook, and there is only 1 person on facebook with this name, and he lives in liverpool, we live 8 miles outside of liverpool..
But liverpool numbers start with a 0151 our area code is not like that.
Any more ideas thanks.0 -

Maybe thats it, perhaps they are trying to get him but the database has the wrong code, the data base gets duplicated and sold on with the wrong code, hay presto!
Personally I would be inclined to call your own number, (but use 0151) see if 'Paul' answers. :T0 -
There is a post on Whocallsme which says that the number 01204677601 belongs to a company called Credit Flex.
The Telephone Number Company tells us that 01204 is the area code for Bolton.
Interestingly, Credit Flex tell us their address is in Bolton.
Clearly not conclusive proof, but...0
