Hd tv?

Hi,

Could somebody tell me what the difference is between HD Ready and Full HD.

I know with HD ready you need the extra freeview or sky box, but is this required for tv's that have full HD.

Thanks in advance.

Full HD means 1080p. HD Ready means 720.

You want Full HD if possible.

    This explains it quite well.
  • HD Ready = 720p

    Full HD = 1080p - Obviously better.

    Sky broadcast HD at 720p

To put it simply 'HD ready and Full HD refer to the resolution the tv is capable of showing. You can now buys tvs that have a HD Freeview or HD Freesat tuner built in although they cost slightly more. If you buy one without the above then get yes you would have to buy a HD Freeview or HD Freesat box or Sky HD to get an HD picture. The only other complication is that some Terrestrial transmitters will not switch over to HD transmissions until 2012 so in those areas your only option till then would be to get HD Freesat or Sky HD.

Just because a TV says FullHD doesn't mean there's an HD tuner built in. In fact unless you're buying 2010 models it almost definitely won't, and should really be referred to as 'Full HD READY'. Ready indicating that something needs to be plugged into it to display HD.
You can't just go by those stickers. HD ready means at least 720 lines and at least 1 HDMI port. Full HD isn't an official term, so can mean whatever people want.
If I was buying a TV now, I'd want it to have FreeviewHD or FreesatHD built in, or else get it very cheap.

The only way to get full HD is to use a Blu Ray player. Everything else is upscaled.

really  :huh:cause my Xbox elite outputs @ 1080p . On MW2 it makes a big difference .

and BTW Sky HD is 1080i :naughty:

don't skimp on a HD TV by buying a supermarket own brand . you get what you pay for

Agree with above, don't get fooled by the numbers, i'd rather watch a good quality 720p telly than a basement brand 1080p.

Take note thought that whilst your XBox 360 and PS3 can OUTPUT 1080p, MOST (not all) of the games they are outputting are done in 720p, and upscaled by the console.
All HD transmitted in the UK (not just Sky) is in 1080i. Therefore a 1080 screen outputs this pixel perfect (as long as overscan is turned off!) and with a 720 panel it will have to be downscaled.

Just to add that to display a 1080i picture, the tv still needs to 'deinterlace' it. If the tv has a bad quality deinterlacer then you lose quality
