I think the majority of high graders will only look at the top 30 or so universities.
When we're recruiting at work, we're pretty fussy about anything other than the top ten or so universities in our subject. A high first from the next 10 or 20 would get attention, but not a 2.i...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
I'd like to know how plenty of private schools can educate children for less than say 10k a year (ok not your Harrows & Etons, but say Manchester Grammar) with small class sizes teaching kids for say 30 odd hours a week
I think that's a very valid point.
One thing to note is that universities will need a lot more in the way of libraries and specialist publications, but I agree, that's not enought o make up the difference....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

no you are taking it down to the lowest comon denominator a degree is supposed to be the cream of the crop, where as literacy(primary school education) is a basic requirement in todays job market0 -

Have you seen Martin's weekly newsletter? Your bete noire (apologies but don't know how to get a circumflex) may just make an appearance. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? I thought that was an interesting point too. To be fair, research can be very expensive and clearly there is no comparison. For example - as I've mentioned before - DH's PhD used £250k of electricity as he experimented using a precursor of the LHC. However there are universities that do very little research and there is where the case is hard to make. I think about 3/4 of research funding goes to the Russell Group.
I also think universities need to work a bit harder so that students don't vote with their feet. For example a relative of mine is doing her PGCE at the moment. When she turned up for her first lecture there were not enough seats in the theatre for the group and so several students had to sit on the floor. Who would put up with that and hand over £7k+ pa for the priviledge? Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? State of the art equipment costs money. Classroom based university courses cost far less to run than those in medical or engineering fields.0
