Nationwide to start a new log in procedure.

  • I saw this when signing in today. My initial thought was why are Nationwide making it so difficult and expensive for us to use their accounts? Oh well, just a couple more direct debits to change and my Nationwide accounts will be dormant.

Re: card readers. I ordered several readers and have put one in each bag (suitcase, backpack, laptop case) + one at home. Then I hope I'm carrying the correct card with me. With so many current accounts, I don't carry all my cards. But it will sure be annoying, wasting a valuable 30 seconds in my mornings if I have to use the card reader just to check my balance. Imagine the amount of damage that will be done to my wallet with this additional card use! Must be some conspiracy with wallet manufacturers!

I dont actually have any nationwide cards any more. I disposed of them a while back.

Now I olny use the account to deposit money from a rental property. I like to keep an eye on that. I suppose I shall have to move this to another bank from now on.

What concerns me is if you away on business you cant quickly login into your account. Using the card reader will be noticable and will result in more attention than necessary. So security is then weaker than before.

    4) It's yet another security measure which annoys, since we already have a user-id which is difficult to remember (when you consider the number of accounts some have, all of which have their own permutations of credentials,) and two passwords on the account.

No - this will replace the passnumber and memorable information (see here).

I would like to see more banks introducing the type of security device that HSBC uses for business accounts - they look like this:

and generate a random six digit number each time you press the button.

I find this much simpler and quicker than going using a card-reader.

So it's replacing those two passwords with the 4 digit PIN? So all someone needs to commit fraud is your user ID, and your card+PIN, instead of your user ID and two different passwords.

Certainly sounds a lot more secure to me.

Especially with the low level of reports of people having money withdrawn from cash machines using.. their card+PIN.

Need cash, consider using a Nationwide ATM.
Members withdrawing cash from non Society ATMs costs millions of pounds per year.
With no shareholders we can pass cost savings on through better rates and service.
So next time you need cash, use a Nationwide ATM so that we can give more back to you.

I used to have one of these (same thing as above I think, just in a different format) - much simpler and true two-factor:

    securid1.jpg

All that was required was user-name, password, and the number it was currently displaying (the number changes regularly, the one I had was once a minute.)

The trouble with these of course, is if you have one for each set of credentials you have (i.e. one per bank) your keyring will get unwieldy and you're back to the inconvenience problem. SecurID is not suited to sharing the token.

Now that really would make a pleasant change.:)

And could even be workable; if Nationwide had a reasonable network of cash machines.

    However....
