    Hello,

I have been told by someone at work tat we shouldn't put shredded paper into the recycling boxes, as the fibres are too small, and it cannot be recycled.

Does anyone know if this is true?

I know you can compost them, but I haven't got a garden? Maybe I could put them in with the garden waste?

    Many thanks

It is indeed true shredded paper is of little use to recyclers in fact it can cause them problems if too much gets past their checks.

The small pieces of shredded paper apparently get caught in the machinery and bring it to a standstill.

Can't be used for pets either as they put chemicals ... in it.

Strange cos my local council specifically lists it as something to go in the recycling bags. I had always thought it was difficult to recycle but as I say they have listed it specifically as being recyclable.

This is what my local council say

You cannot use your blue recycling bin to dispose of:

    Plastic film & food packaging
    Tetra packs (juice cartons etc)
    Envelopes, wallpaper, wrapping paper
    Corks
    Glass
    Shredded paper

Nothing mentioned about shredded paper for composting in the brown bin.
