Recycling shredded paper (merged)

The compost point is a good one. Compost heaps need dry material in there to balance out the green stuff in the compost bugs' diet and to stop the heap from going smelly. Keep it in the garage and add a couple of handfuls whenever you put some kitchen waste on the heap. Avoid coloured paper if you can though.
It's great for packing fragile things too.0 -
Last year I used it instead of straw around my strawberry plants. The plants held most of it in place and it did the job of keeping the fruit off the ground. The slugs seemed to avoid it as well.0

I do all of the above with mine and i also donate to a pet shop and a local dog rescue place. I don't actually produce enough paper to do so continuously and i take my neighbours paper shreds with me as well.Blackadder: Am I jumping the gun, Baldrick, or are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?
Still lurking around with a hope of some salvation:cool:0 -

Stupid but true !
Actually people can shread all sorts of paper together making it hard to recycle, different types of paper need different types of treating and some are not recyclable at all. They can also shread things like credit cards all of which goes to contaminate the paper recycling process.I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.0 -

Or you could add some to your wormery, if you have one.
Organic gardeners may have some concerns about the heavy metals present in some coloured inks. I don't add coloured paper to mine.People who don't know their rights, don't actually have those rights.0 -

well we have a neighbour puts out a bag of shredded paper maybe once a week and the bopx collectors havent asid anything yet about it being shredded, it could depend on the area thoughNo Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20 -

It does depend on the area.
I've lived in two London boroughs where one would happy take shredded paper as long as it is put in a separate bag, while the other one refused to take it at all.
Now I live in a flat in a completely different borough the only way I get to recycle anything is if I make the effort.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

Could you put it out in the recycling collection?
there was a story in our local paper - where a woman was complaining that she put out her shreded paper in her green box, but the council just put it in the bin - the councils comment was they didn't have the facilities to deal with recycled paper at this time and that if she wanted to recycle the paper she should put it in the box unshreaded!!
all our shredings used to make bedding for my housemates rabit and guinee pig .. now i am no longer sharing it goes to my parents who slowly introduce it to their compost heap.Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"0
