Recycling shredded paper (merged)

Guinea pigs actually need hay to help with their digestion, they should have a constant supply of it. I've always been advised not to use straw as it can have sharp ends which can damage their eyes.
Actually everything that I was then going to say. My two pigs eat so much hay that we have to replenish nearly everyday. You're right Straw should not be used. I keep that for my 12 chickens.0 -
My concern about shredded office paper is staples, most good shredders take staples with no trouble. Pigs however do not!0

my ds does that too with his house binnies littler tray, changed daily no smell and they do nibble bits of it with no ill effect.0 -
My gerbils are on a mix of wood shavings and shredded paper/ card and are absolutely fine. I find it reduces the amount of dust compared to just shavings. My sources of shredded paper don't shred plastic or staples (they know I won't take it if it has any in!).2009 wins: Signed Saxon CD, Solar Torch, Drumsticks, Priest Feast Tix, Watch, Hammerfest tix :beer:0

Yup should be fine, and if the piggys are outside it will help keep them warm in cold weather.0

My little piggy is nearly 5 (Hi Sparky, if you're reading this....he's very clever you know!) and we line his cage with newspaper which he reads every day with his teeth...then no sawdust!
It's not good for their little lungs. They snuffle around looking for goodies, (normally out of the food bowl that they like to upend and spill out), and they breathe in the minute dusty particles.
Best thing is newspaper first, then line the whole cage with the hay with an extra bundle in the corner or wee housie to sleep in. Needs topped up almost daily as mine is greedy lying on his comfy hay bed nibbling all round him...it'd be just like me having a bed made of chocolate....I could just lie there and nibble bits without even getting up! :rotfl:mmmmm chocolate...............
so please press my :T thanks :Tbutton x
