The Down Syndrome Educational Trust (which Rogerb above said was collected okay) and the others below; all seem to use the same number 84858 (with a different text message to identify each charity obviously - so if one works then all of them should be okay?)
I tried sightsavers and it did not work either :(Sightsavers, Poppy Appeal and some of the others use a different number to 84858, perhaps that's why they didn't work?
Details in original posting above
Looks like the 84858 text donation service is run by Justgiving SMS:

Good spot on the 84858 number - picked out 6 of these and all texts have gone through ok.0 -
I too decided to use my easyMobile credit up by SMS donation, didn't realise other had the same idea until I googled for SMS donation.
I've donated to 8 charities so far, 7 via an 84858 number, then I found this thread!
I have £160+ to use up, at first I thought about SMS competition and did enter a few, but then had the idea to put my credit to good use. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
Macmillan's campaign, called 'Today another 739 people will need a Macmillan nurse' uses posters, newspaper and TV ads to urge donors to text the word 'support', 'nurse', 'help' or 'Macmillan' to premium rate number 85222. This deducts £3 from the donor's mobile.
Donors are then sent a WAP message inviting them to fill out the Macmillan-branded mobile internet Gift Aid form to confirm they are UK taxpayers. Macmillan can then claim the Gift Aid - an extra 84p on the £3 donation.0 -
Do macMillan get the whole £3? I haven't found any charity or agency that manages to get the full donation.for more info check out www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk . You'll find me there.

Text ‘Pink’ to 83338 to download your very own pink ribbon*.
Every pink ribbon downloaded
will mean a valuable £1.50 donation to Breast Cancer Care, :T
plus it will cost you the usual cost of your text message.
*You will need to ensure that your WAP browser is on and
that your phone has colour and MMS capability.
thanks i didnt know you could do this... once a month i will remember to do this now0 -

I was thinking the same thing. This has come up in a thread about easymobile, but every month I often have loads of unused text messages left and I'd happily donate these...
Have all the companies excluded premium rate texts from the free inclusive texts you get, though?

You've never been able to use text allowances for premium SMS texting, your SMS text allowance is only for standard SMS texts, as they only cost an extremely tiny fraction of a penny to send, premium SMS texts are reverse billed, the money for these has to come from somewhere, if it was to come of of free text allowance, it would have to be several hundred or more of them, but the mobile companies aren't going to do that, as the want you to believe that standard texts have a value of 10p or so and not the fraction of a penny they do have. So these SMS will be billed to you or come out of your credit. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... well i feel all warm and fuzzy. i just spent 20mins texting 35 texts to various charities on the 84858 number.
dont forget, less than 48hours to spend your credits.0 -

You can now make a donation to Sightsavers with your mobile. It's very simple, and you can even do it on the move.
How does it work?
To make a one off donation, simply text the word SIGHT ONCE to the number 87070.
To make a monthly donation, simply text the word SIGHT REGULAR to the same number, 87070¹.
Once you have done this, we will send you a reply text to thank you for your support.
The Donation
For each text, your network provider will charge £1.50 to your next bill. From this charge, Sight Savers will be given £1 to help support our work in the developing world.
How your texts really can help save sight:
1Text could protect 9 people from River Blindness or treat 7 people suffering from Trachoma
2 Texts could protect at least 2 families from River Blindness, or provide 4 courses of Tetracycline to treat Trachoma.
5 Texts could provide a person with the late stages of Trachoma with a simple operation to turn the eyelids outwards and prevent blindness.
12 Texts could help to restore sight and provide primary eye care training.0 -

These texts are great if you have free credit etc, but if you just want to donate then please give direct as £1 out of £1.50 means only 66% of the money goes to the charity and they cannot claim gift aid (UK taxpayers) on it..if you give direct they get 100% of the donation plus gift aid on top. Sightsavers is a fantastic organisation and if you set up a monthly direct debit even if only for a few quid (the price of a pint in a pub) you could save or restore somebodys sight - go on it's Christmas.

You can also give as Christmas gifts:

best of everything; they just make the best
of everything that comes along their way."
