I would pay it and grumble.

Its easy for people to comment - but you got a job, with nice people, at a family firm, where they give you almost a grand in bonuses at xmas they dont need to.

£45 quid back out of that is a lot cheaper than being ostracised by the office or talked about.

If you want to change it then preempt it next year by you being the one to arrange it and go for something that isnt so expensive.

If you really can't manage the £45, why don't you just have a quiet word with the organiser and say things are a bit tight at the mo and you can only contribute £25 (or whatever) this year and you hope that's OK.

Presumably she wouldn't be so indiscrete as to announce what you'd said to the rest of the office...?

    Hello there
I am seriously risking the wrath of the girls who organise this, one of them happens to be the sister/cousin of 2 of the bosses (its a small family firm)

In that situation if you value the job and your bosses' goodwill then I'd contribute with good grace and not risk their future generosity.

As advised above, think of it as an investment in your job instead of a contribution to a gift, it might make it easier to swallow.

If your bosses thought it was over the top then they are in a position to say something to the family member involved in the collection. But they obviously do not view it as an excessive amount in view of the bonuses they give.
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D

  • I used to have to put in £5 for each of my bosses for birthdays,
xmas, aniversarys, their childs marriage, birth of grandchild etc etc. Fiver here fiver there x 2 of them cost me a fortune over the year, and I couldn't stand either of them:mad:

I agree with the posters who have suggested maybe asking the organiser if the amount could be reduced slightly - I take it from your posts that this is the most they have ever asked for, in which case suggesting you all put in the same amount as last year would be a good opener.

Considering you're personally getting £650 worth of bonuses then the contribution is small in comparison.

How would you feel if they didn't pay you a bonus? Are you contracted to receive it? You threatening to pull out of the money contributions could even spark a rethink into the whole Christmas giving situation (whoch I trust you don't want to upset the apple cart).

Making four cakes instead is (sorry) a poor idea. You go to all that trouble for something that may well end up in the bin and for what? To save a few quid on a donation that will have you sticking out like a sore thumb.

It equates to £11.25 per boss - seriously just pay it and smile when you open your generous bonus paypacket.

How can you be so skint you cant afford this £45. You are getting £650(bonus) that isnt technically yours it is given but not expected.
How about if the bosses just couldnt afford your bonus, seems fair. I am sure then you would be glad to give that xmas pressie to them.
They give you the bonus in goodwill and you cant even put in a measly £10 each for a pressie for them,.

You seem to take , take , take (bonus, time off if child ill, accommodating your needs) and dont want to give anything back.

Given the situation I'd pay it but thats only because they are paying you a bonus. If it was a larger company, or no bonus was paid then I wouldn't donate to the bosses fund.
  • If you expect to get a "bonus" or christmas present from the "boss" of say £500 then why not expect to give a little back. After all they don't have to and are likely doing this as goodwill to you. I treat my staff fairly and in return they are fair with me. Not all bosses are a bunch of !!!!!!.

Sorry this really annoys me. At the end of the day when you own a business although there is a legal line between the company and your pay packet in reality you own that business and its my pocket paying out these bonuses.
  • £45.... My husband and I spend £50 on each other at xmas so being expected to spend that much on your boss is excessive IMO. Have a word with the girl orgainising it and explain that this year you simply can't afford that amount.
