Why should you put in £45 - that's a ridiculous amount of money and I wouldn't even spend that much on my family members! That equates to £112.50 per boss which is madness . Even £10 each (still £25 a boss - which would buy a decent bottle of whisky etc) is a bit much, regardless of how much bonus you get. Your bonus isn't dependent on whether your boss gets a nice xmas pressie is it? Common sense needs to prevail here and if you all get together and agree a more manageable sum each then your colleagues may well thank you for it
You shouldn't have to feel 'obliged'. 0 -

This whole thread must be a MASSIVE p!ss take...I just cannot believe this one little jot!!!!!!!!!......0 -
I can believe it! I feel for you OP. Why don't you have a little word in the organisers ear and say that you are really strapped for cash at the moment... you don't need to justify it. Offer to bake a few cakes or something similar. xxx0

Why is it a p!ss take???
It is a genuine questionmust_try_harder wrote: »Sorry - I realise it does sound a bit patronising. I guess my reasoning is that I know lots of people who have worked very hard and have been laid off through no fault of their own. Just bad luck. So I suppose in my eyes if you have a job and it hasn't been affected adversely by the recession and you haven't had to take a pay cut then that in itself is lucky.
It's for this reason that I think myself lucky every day for having a decent job that I enjoy. Despite working very hard for my money, doing things that other people flat out refuse to do, and I don't actually think I get paid enough for my qualifications. But at least I'm employed...
Thats no problem, everyone is entitled to their opinion and to be honest I feel so torn. On the one hand yes they are a great company to work for and I get my bonus and they are so good to me that I even feel awful having the thoughts not to contribute to the collection but then on the other hand I feel that blimey I just do not have the money to spend that much on a bosses present when I won't even spend that much on, say, my mum !! If I had the money I wouldnt bat an eyelid but things really are tough. I'm a single mum with a hefty mortgage whilst all my colleagues are living with husbands and partners and do not struggle like me.
I suppose at the end of the day its only something I can decide but thankyou for ALL your opinions

I don't think anyone should feel pressurised into contributing but given that it is less than 1/10 of the bonus they give you - that they don't HAVE to give you, it sounds like a small contribution in comparison to theirs. Personally I wouldn't want to risk my bonus if it was me.If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0

Sounds like a generous firm to work for so I would pay the £45. To me, receiving £500 at Christmas would have been great, cos I've worked for some skinflints over the years!

What? 45/4=11.25, that's £11.25 per boss. Did you do the calculation on a calculator and add a decimal point to the 4?
Tbh, the whole thing is a bit bizzare but bonuses, unless in the contract, are discretionary and certainly not part of the salary, especially the £150 cash in hand. I'd just not rock the boat on this, it isn't worth it.0 -
sorry - but every firm I have worked for (forty years or so in mostly short term or temp contracts) the BOSSES have given bonuses or christmas gifts or both. I have NEVER ever, worked anywhere which expected me to contribute to the bosses christmas present! only if a boss is leaving, having a baby or is ill have I ever seen a whip round (and even then the amounts were up to the individual). I find this mind-boggling actually! If I were the boss I would be embarrassed to get a present from the staff - especially If I knew that they had to put in a minimum amount!0

I imagine the poster took into account the fact that 10 people are paying in which does, indeed, make a total of £112.50 per boss.
KiKi' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".0 -
I have never worked anywhere where the staff bought the bosses presents, it's always been the bosses buying?
I'd say no, I'm doing my own gifts this year, already bought and wrapped, sorrreeee.... *walking away*0
