These things are lethal and should be removed along with chicanes, raised sections and flashing signs.

Theres enough to watch out for without all of these pointless distractions.

What you mean like removing everything from the roads. Chicanes, raised junctions and flashing signs have their uses and 'removing them all' misses the point and is like a green saying 'remove all motorways' or Daily Mail saying 'remove all health and safety rules'.

It totally depends how this is signed and looks like. The OP is asking us to make a judgement with no photos etc.

Some of these bollard hitters are Darwin award winners however. Amazes me that we were in France / Holland and they had them without any of the mass markings that we did- just one sign beside them and never seemed to be problems.

If people got their vehicle smashed up every time they did something wrong there would be no cars left on the road, nobody is perfect. The passenger of the van didn't drive it through the bollards, does he deserve to bang his head on the windscreen? What about rear passengers such as kids who I often see without belts?
The problem could just as easily be solved without endangering people like this. Its total overkill.

Tough luck - they should have had their seatbelts on is all I can say. And yeah, I think that its perfectly reasonable the bollard morons getting their vehicles smashed up. Its a perfect punishment for their imbecilic incompetence.

the ones we have in york are a nightmare, always malfunctioning. there should be signs, stop lights, signs etc so you know they are there! http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/8291177.Electronic_bollard_on_Stonebow__York__damages_taxi/

Why, is a big lump of metal not big enough to see? That one in the link above took one hell of a whack so it was yet another typical taxi driver trying to beat it rising and thus trying to save himself waiting.
  • Hammy, just because you see it and I see it, doesn't mean everyone does. There are enough cases of people doing stupid things without giving them more things to hit. They aren't the only ones who suffer. The taxi that drives through them has fares, the mum might have kids in the back, the AA man towing a car etc.

Tough. Easily solved though by making such things an instant lifetime ban to include not only licenced but unlicenced transport such as bicycles. That would result in aforementioned taxi driver never being able to put anyone at risk ever again.

Someone has to take PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR OWN ACTIONS. You cannot legislate, put up signage or systems to cover every eventuality without making it completely unworkable.

Mind you, we can always go back to a maximum speed of 5 MPH and having to have a man with a red flag running in front of the vehicle. Would that keep you happy? You may have a problem doing the weekly shopping though.

These people prove softer measure won't work they'll ignore them.

The passenger of the van should have been wearing a seat belt as its an legal requirement but van drivers seem to think there above this. The block with the child in the back of the car should loose his licence from dangerous driving and endangering a child.

You can see in both these cases the drivers where fully aware of what they where doing as they sped up to try and make it though both driver should be made accountable for there bad driving. They had not just got lost or didn't see them because there was bus in way they. They clearly knew they were trying to do something there not meant too.

Its very clearly sign posted in the city centre.
  • It's just as well we don't have grammar police then...
  • As I've said before...I am not talking about bollards that control speed, restrict traffic for bus lanes only, or are key/card operations which permit access to an area for specific personnel, where Jo Bloggs takes a chance to get through. The bollards in question were installed in a free car park, open to all the public, with no controls around them, and in my opinion a proper risk assessment would have highlighted the dangers they posed if they malfunctioned, and as far as I'm aware they were only installed to serve the purpose to lock down the car park at night. They all go up at once, or down at once. To have them malfunction is outright dangerous...

Did anybody else crashed into it? Did it malfunction? Or they just did not lower it for one reason or another?

To say it malfunctioned and they are at fault is probably wrong because it didnt raise as you drove over it. You
just didnt look where you were going.

If there were 2 gates to an entrance and they got lazy and only opened one because its wide enough. You come along
and crash into the gate thats still closed. Whose fault is it?
