retractable bollards on carpark entrance

Yes, they don't need to have so much upward force, it only needs to be strong laterally if anywhere. They could make them out of flexible plastic like those on traiifc islands; They'd serve the same purpose but not be dangerous.Of course some people would just drive over them but these sites seem to be monitored by cctv so easy enough to penalise anyone doing that.
Edited to add:Imagine one of these things going up underneath your fuel tank in a nice busy town centre or confined space of a car park entrance.0 -
Even if they were made out of the same material as now, they should go back down if something's detected above them and if there's a sensor fault, stay down0

Yeah they should.Have you seen the clips on youtube of what a company in the states is selling them for?To "protect your facility from terrorists" or something and shows a demonstration of a 7ton truck hitting one at 50mph and stopping dead, completely destroying the whole truck(occupants would be somewhere inside the block thats pushed back 4 feet) without damaging the bollards.Slight overkill for the multistorey methinks.0

Yeah 5th gear tested stuff like that, it's insane the force they can withstand.0

They're a bloody stupid idea especially when one vehicle is following another eg the white van that follows a postvan on one clip.He is higher up than a car so harder to see the bollard coming up(very quickly) as its hidden by the bonnet. His passenger isn't wearing a seatbelt and breaks the windscreen with his head(blah blah should have had a seatbelt on yes but there are exceptions in the law) .
It is very clearly signed with those bollard in Manchester to limit traffic down that way. Too bloody right they deserve there car smashed up. The driver of that van knew well what he doing as he sped up.
How you can any sympathy for the van driver I don't know and his idiot of passenger.
Yeah there not perfect but in the Manchester case there great. I remember how busy that road used to be before the bollards came.0 -
If people got their vehicle smashed up every time they did something wrong there would be no cars left on the road, nobody is perfect. The passenger of the van didn't drive it through the bollards, does he deserve to bang his head on the windscreen? What about rear passengers such as kids who I often see without belts?
The problem could just as easily be solved without endangering people like this. Its total overkill.0 -
No stop lines, no red/green lights, no sign/signs giving times of when in operation, coming straight off a mini roundabout, with little distance to the bollards, no illumination, no painted areas to denote any change to the road surface itself...I personally don't think the management could've completed a thorough risk assessment, or these issues should have been noted and rectified..unfortunately not in time for me to avoid wrecking my car, coupled with the fact they haven't been operated since, either when the centre is open, or at night when it's closed to everyone...0
