Hi again, I agree that the DVLA will be cheaper but don't some sites bid for plates that are similar to names because they can sell them for more. Would this mean I would be bidding against them? or is it not done like that.

Any advice would be good, never bought a plate before

    Thanks

I'm also eyeing up a new 11 plate. I've bought plates before but haven't planned it before it's even released.

Firstly when it comes to companies other than the DVLA I'm highly skeptical. Due to an experience where a plate I found suddenly sold overnight.. I wonder how much attention is paid to the searches people make on these transfer sites. (Skeptical and far fetched I know.. but if you analysed what plates were searched for most, you know which ones are worth more..) Anyway.. as a result I only ever search on the DVLA now and other sites as a last resort if I know the DVLA don't have it available.

I'm sure the DVLA will pick out a few belters and put them up for auction.. but they don't have the resources to reserve thousands. So I guess you'll need to hit the website with the masses when available. "The series of registration (11) you have searched for is not currently available for sale but will be available in December 2010. Full details will appear on this website closer to that date."

My only other thought is whether these transfer site and dealer networks have alternative purchasing routes through trade accounts or dedicated account managers. If thats the case your plate may never appear online if it's really that good.

When you buy a plate online, the DVLA send you the tittle documents. You need these to get your plate made. When you have your plate, you take the plates, the forms, your V5 and your tax disc to the local DVLA office where they transfer the registration over and give you a new tax disc with the new reg number on it.

Anyway after an hour of waffle and little new information for you.. best of luck watching for your new plate. I hope your not looking for the same one as me ;)

Hi, was planning on putting it on retention for a couple of years. Been looking for a number plate like this for a while so don't want to miss the chance!

Hi all wondered if you could help. I would like to buy a number plate that is due out in 2011. I have seen it on one of the sites that sell number plates but want to buy it direct from the DVLA (if i can). I am aware that the number plates are for new cars but have been told I could keep it until it could go on my car? anybody know how long this would be? I am assuming 6 months due to them changing every 6 months...might be wrong though!

    Please help :)

Seriously - who have you been talking to?

Eschaton..I was posting as a question which is why the answers were posted below my question!
  • Hi, wondered if anyone could help, I've also seen an 11 plate I would like (& have ordered an 11 plate car), it's on the DVLA site which said it's for sale at 8.30am on 7th December 2010, I've also seen the same number plate on other number plate websites. Do you know if these other websites can purchase the number plates before the date DVLA are selling them on their website, is it the DVLA that hold the number plates 1st, any advice would be geatly received.

    Many thanks
    Jo

I don't think they can - my impression is that these sites simply buy from DVLA and add a commission on. Granted they might be able to get to it quicker at the actual moment of release though.
