If it's happening with different brands of disk then it's likely that the drive itself is failing. The last firmware ( the piece of software built into the drive ) update for it appears to have been in July 2006, so I'd guess that you've had it quite a while. You could try opening the drive and cleaning the rails that the laser's carriage rides on, but it'd been simpler just to pay the £15 or so that a new drive would cost - presuming that it's not a notebook drive. They're easy to install, you'd just need to determine whether it's uses IDE or SATA to connect to the motherboard. The connectors are easy to differentiate.

OK, I did have 1 sucessful (or so I thought) burn of the vista recovery image using ImgBurn, however this is the error when it gets past the product key stage at the beginning

"Windows cannot open the required file E:\Sources\install.wim. The file does not exist. Make sure all files requried for installation are available and restart. Error Code: 0x80070002"

Concerning the disc you have created; If you pop the disc into a drive, what is contained on the disc?

I have updated the firmware now, and yes, I did buy it in 2006 so that's probably right. It's now updated though

Also, you are not creating the Recovery Disc to which I linked. Yours appears to be a disc created from a Microsoft Digital River download.

    The correct details should be:

    I 14:33:30 Source File: C:\Users\MOD\Documents\Vista_Recovery_Disc.iso
    I 14:33:30 Source File Sectors: 61,675 (MODE1/2048)
    I 14:33:30 Source File Size: 126,310,400 bytes
    I 14:33:30 Source File Volume Identifier: 2007.11.03_2329
I 14:33:30 Source File Volume Set Identifier: 2007.11.03_2329
I 14:33:31 Source File Implementation Identifier: Microsoft IMAPI v1.0
    I 14:33:31 Source File File System(s): ISO9660 (Bootable), Joliet, UDF (1.02)

A folder called "boot" and within this there are 3 files titled

    bcd
    boot.sdi
    bootfix

And a second folder called sources, with one file in it called "boot.wim"

And a third file called bootmgr

Did you follow the guide in my first post in order to repair your system?

The drive is blank, so a repair isn't really an option now

I meant on the 27th of September or at any time since then.
