The old four posters had thick curtains all around plus a canopy to keep the draughts out and the heat in.
The cupboard beds were often in the main room of a house ,so only one room to have to bother about heating.
Thick curtains were hung over doors as well as windows.
They also used to wear head gear at night and bed socks.
All their clothes were natural fibres too which are usually breathable, warm in winter and cool in summer.

They bathed once a week and washed hair once a fortnight they did not have a shower either - do we really want to go back to this ?- it would save money yes but I for one would rather be poor and warm and clean smelling nice than like that!
Saving in my terramundi pot £2, £1 and 50p just for me! :j

Did no-one mention thermal pyjamas? With bedsocks and a nightcap (whichever interpretation of the word you desire, or both if it's really bitterly cold ;) ), fleecy lined slippers for those occasional unavoidable trips to the loo, and an old fleece jacket to act as a dressing gown, you'll be warm as toast.

If you're running late in the morning, no need to get dressed for work either! :D
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

..... I saw some tents before that just flip out of a bag with no assembly required (dome shaped). Do you know where I can get one from?

We got one of these from Decathlon a large sports department store, but that was last year, not sure if they still have them, worth checking though!

    Good luck

Just edited to say that I noticed on the Decathlon website that they still do them, called the Quechua 2 seconds.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

If the kids have friends around to stay they always sleep in a tent in the conservatory in the winter they always say they get 2 warm and I worry to much about them being cold. It also makes for a good sleep for mum and dad as you can,t hear them talking.

  • Tents aren't warm so wouldn't bother personally. Completely agree with Bogofbabe about the thermals, socks, jacket and woolly hat. I usually get into my night gear in the warmest room in the house, as I don't heat upstairs.
A hot water bottle is really good as well. I also take the dog to bed (make of that what you will:D ) and a hay box of "milk turning to yoghurt" (with a tight fitting lid) as it needs warmth at about body heat.
Having just re-read this I guess it explains why I'm single - I can hardly be an alluring sight pottering round in my thermal jim jams with box of sour milk clutched to my bosom:o

I was discussing retaining heat not retaining smells LOL.

I wonder why they don't make the equivalent of the child's tent bed. We get just as cold!

Mirry, your post made me laugh!!

Lily the pink, hee hee I don't plan on using my bodily functions for heating. It's good to know I'm not the only one who thinks of using a tent indoors.

Caterina, I had a look at those tents and unfortunately it appears you have to throw them in the air to open them up! I can't see my furniture surviving if I did that. LOL.

In true MSE style - don't go buying a tent - ask for one off freecycle.
  • I've asked for things on Freecycle before and struck lucky a couple of times.
