Getting me teeth fixed.

Well, you seem to be completely disillusioned with UK dentists - this bloke was trying to advertise on here recently, why not check him out:

Let us know how you get on.0 -
no good
it still adds up to more than the £2k OP has budgeted for the treatment
" I'm budgeting a couple of thousand for 2 simple extractions and the prep of the remaining teeth for crowns/bridgework and cementation of the crowns once made"

That's rather strange because as I recollect every dentist who has commented on this thread has said what a bad idea crowning all of your teeth is.
In fact I can't see any posts encouraging you down this path.
However it may be because we don't have you in front of us dangling your money in front of our piggy eyes. Or maybe because we are trying to give you disinterested advice and also anyone else reading this thread.
As to never crowning anything .... I'm sure you know about the risk benefit ratio. All dental treatment carries risk, every single one. The more extensive the treatment the greater the risk. I can , in the right situation, justify one or more crowns. I have never, in many years, crowned 28 teeth and I have NEVER in all those years seen anyone with every tooth in their head crowned.
But then I could be lying because as we all know what people tell you on the Internet isn't always the truth.0 -

I've been thinking that as I read through all the OP's posts! This has got to be a wind-up.

That's unusual...:D0 -

I saw one case about 25 years ago but that was due to amelogenesis imperfecta AND the patient was a professional chef.
ETA: the crowns were not all done at once but gradually over a period of 2 years or so.0 -
I'm betting he won't have all his teeth now.0

For argument sake say 28 crown preps, impressions of both arches and temps placed. Then remove temps, cement permanent crowns and adjust. How many hours of the practitioner time do you think it would take?
As for going abroad for dental treatment, as the costs of dentistry in the UK spiral ever higher, people in need of significant treatment are left with little choice. I mean it's certainly preferable to having people like you spitting poison at them because they don't have £5-10k to drop on your suggested treatment plan.
But I haven't suggested a treatment plan.
I just offered advice on how to find a dentist to assess you properly.
The only dentist who has seen you has told you you don't need anything major.
Even though you were telling him all sorts of things that you thought were wrong and needed attention.
If he were so inclined, he could have agreed with you, done a much bigger NHS treatment for which he could claim much more money, and even offer to do a load of stuff privately and give you an enormous quote.
But he didn't.
But unfortunately, that wouldn't fit with the whinge you really want to have about all dentists making up unnecessary treatment, overcharging and taking advantage of patients.
So, this dentist is obviously undertreating, and in order to get this chip off your shoulder, you've made up a completely unlikely treatment plan for yourself, and dreamt up your own price for it.
I have never done a treatment plan with 28 crowns. I have never seen a patient with 28 crowns.
I think you need to find this dentist who will do whatever you want if you slap a big enough wad on the table. But if my advice is worth anything to you at all, I really wouldn't bother.
So either accept what you have been told by the dentist you have seen (Who will be UK registered, and therefore insured, so if his advice really is bad, you're in the money, as you can sue him.) OR find a dentist who may be a little more proactive via your technician mate. OR go out on your quest to find this mythical dentist who can do you 28 crowns in an afternoon for £2k.
Your choice. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -

Your contention that most dentists are honest is at odds with the evidence. It may not be a palatable fact for you to deal with, but the new dental contract which replaced the piecework contract you used to work under as an NHS practitioner, was brought in largely to deal with large scale systematic abuse of that system. As soon as the prefix 'cosmetic' became commonly attached to 'dentistry' the direction the profession was headed was clear. Out with prophylactic treatments and early intervention, in with watching things rot and salivating at the monies to be made restoring those now diseased quadrants with snow white crowns. NHS dentistry is now little more than a conveyor belt providing dentists with opportunities to bait and switch patients to private treatments. Need a 3 unit bridge? Can't do it on the NHS I'm afraid (despite signing a contract that say you should if necessary), but for the low low price of £2000 I can do it privately. Or maybe it could really be the dentists lucky day, a large redundancy payment sir? How about an implant and a few crowns, special offer just for today £4000.
Am I saying all dentists are like that? No. Dentistry does however have far far more than its fair share of mountebanks.
I actually find your allegations particularly with no evidence of this being as widespread as you allege. You have clearly made your mind up as to us all being crooks so why waste your time coming a place like this and pretend to ask for advice?
I have NEVER operated in the manner you suggest and I am almost entirely NHS funded. I also know of few others that do what you are alleging. You can not simply pluck some random numbers from an un named lab in china and brand us all crooks. You have NO idea how a dental practice runs. None at all. All you are doing is looking at a few (incorrect) examples and rushing to a conculsion0 -
theheathen wrote: »I'd be glib too. Did you know the average dentist now earns significantly more than the average GP? As a profession you excel at making out you're hard done by, whilst being remunerated very handsomely.
you are in fact wrong there. .... but do you have any referenced figures to back that up? I very much doubt it.0
