LMAO at this post has to be some of the biggets load of pap i have read with regards as to how to drill a hole.

so you're the expert now are you !!!

who in there right mind takes a set of callipers in to a shop and starts measuring drill bits.....you will be telling us next you take them to dominoes to make sure your getting the full 12" pizza you have paid for

that was just an observation Ive made recently ..im not forcing anyone to do this ....i noticed that some of my holes where a bit sloppier than they should be ..so i measure a few bits ..and discovered that they weren't all 7mm ...its called Chinese quality control

secondly you say "you should be using the brown rawl plaugs"..why? the correct hole size and rawl plug to use is the one that suits the job you are trying to do.

because they keep being pulled out ..so I'm giving him advice ..for a strong kiddy proof job

avoid using hammer action.......drilled in to many concrete lintels have you....you need the right drill on the right setting for the right job....to say no hammer action is wrong.

who motioned lintels ..hes talking about a wall...that may be breeze block ..drilling breeze block ..you can get a sloppy hole

"do not spin the screw in the plug when its home"..if you have drilled the correct size hole, used the correct rawl plug and the correct screw it will tighten as if its was screwed into wood, when it all the way home it wont spin, will only spin if you have used too small a screw or drilled too big a hole for the rawl plug your using.

so youre saying that this has never happened to you ...

it will spin ...if you overtorque it ..I'm just trying to cover every aspect of the job ..

he's wanting the best advice ...and thats what im giving him .

    all the best.markj

Recently i had a metal gate that kept on coming off as the hole had become too large. All sorts of plugs and filling failed. I spoke to a neighbour and he asked me to get hold of a piece of wood and he sliced off small chips of wood with a sharp knife. We put them in the hole and using a smaller plug screwed it back on. Bingo. It standing firm and working perfectly. It may also work without using a plug. Worth a try.

Sorry I take advice on whats on the label,
Life is too short to wander around BQ with a calliper :D

Once had a gentlemen come in with Geiger counter to test the fire alarms he was about to buy worked. Thing is that smoke detector use a Alpha radiation source that can barely pass though paper never made the packaging or the case of the item.

I would agree. As others have said dont reuse holes and go deeper. Is one side a wall or banister. If one side is going into plaster board then it will need proper plaster board raw plugs as well.

mate your digging a bigger hole everytime you post.....use your callipers to measure it

i am a joiner to trade and must have drilled thousands of holes for frame fixings,windows..etc in my time ,a properly sized hole, rawl plug and screw combinition wont spin, when its tight its tight, your more likley to ruin the head of the screw or your screw bit by trying to overtighten.

some of the things you are taking about in this thread and others in the diy thread are just poor advice.....whats your back ground..do you have a trade...not that that is important to give advice....just post about things you know about...for example i have no expirence of tiling so i dont offer any advice on it.
  • To the op,what colour of rawl plugs are you using and length of screw (approx)...and we can see if we can help out

these are handy for some applications(eg i wouldnt wall mount a TV on them!)
Ive used them to mount a mirror and fit a ceiling mount for my bike with no problems

  • As a last resort when facing similar problems have always used ready mixed Tetrion with 100% success rate. Press quantity of Tetrion into hole & cover plug in same, press into hole removing excess with damp cloth. Leave to dry if required, I usually don't bother with this though & insert screw straight away. Hope this helps, will keep my head down now as I am sure there will be plenty of people ready to tell you this is not the way to do things.

If it works for you , why worry .
I admit being lazy , although having all different sizes and colours and makes of plugs littering up my workshop. 99% of the time i will reach for the red rawplugs and the 6mm drills which came when I bought the 100 piece pack. No 8 screw and job done.

Having a hubby who has shelves falling down with just a feather on them - when I needed a gate i used a 'pressure mounted gate' .
Greyer by the minute - Older by the hour - Wiser by the day
  • Thanks for the replies, didn't expect so many, lol.

btw, I am a girl (and 9 months pregnant too) so my DIY knowledge is pretty poor!

I don't think it's plasterboard, just looks like plaster all the way through the hole?

umm, they are grey plugs now, a bigger size than the first ones we tried :) Though looking at what has fallen out, the ends of the screws only reach about half way down the rawl plug, they were almost as long but the plastic mount (which the stairgate hooks onto) is a few mm thick. Do I need longer screws?

Can't drill a new hole as the stairgate needs to fit in the gap between the skirting board and the handrail so it has to go right where it is or the whole thing won't fit. I'm thinking some kind of filler sounds like the easiest option so will go to Wickes later and get some of that wet-and-fix, or Tetrion. Maybe some longer screws too?
