DH used to be North Sea trawlerman, and has always said that if the fish smell of amonia ( you will really notice this) once defrosted then it is no good, the only exception to this is Skate which apparently smells a bit this way anyway

Thank you for this, decided to throw it out anyway, i instinctively felt it was right, not worth the risk of illness :)

    Hello everyone
My song for the day today is.... 'it's the end of the world as we know it'!
I'm very concerned about what this afternoon will bring, I personnally don't believe that cutting and cutting is the way to grow the county's economy. The thousands of people losing jobs will stop spending, resulting in more businesses going bust, meaning more people out if work with no disposable income... sounds like a vicious circle to me. I would be delighted to be wrong, but I don't unerstand how this will work.
But... I'm still hopeful that I'll find work. I'm in HR, so unfortunately they need people like me to run redundancy programmes etc, which is a miserable thought but if it keeps food on the table, so be it.
It's a lovely day here, but very cold. I've got the heating on at the moment because I really can't bear being cold, but think I may get my duvet off the bed and wrap up after the chill from the air has gone so I can turn it off.
Say what you mean.. mean what you say... without being mean.

Well i'm back from the hospital, i'm now being referred to the gym section of the rehabilitation centre :j:j:j:j.
Yes i know it may not seem like a big deal but i've waiting for some good news regarding my leg since August, so i'm chuffed :D.

So in a week i've managed to get me and snips (ds2) sorted out with occupational therapists and phsyio! :D
Checked the bank its not looking good, roll on next month when i get paid. My OH still hasn't got his check off the boss:mad:. So looks like two weeks of wages will go at the same time. Got a back up of fifty opund cash which is really for the landlord. So just going to do a freezer run i.e no shopping. But we do have loads of cheese now so should be okay, i hope.

Right going to put the radio on with news and crack on with some much needed tidying.

I feel like running round the streets screaming "we're all doomed. doomed I tell you" but I think my neighbours would have me locked up!:rotfl:

I so agree that cutting jobs etc at this point is very likely to cause no end of bother, I do see that the deficit has got to be tackled, but much like any hpusehold that enters into a debt repayment plan it needs to be managed carefully and allow the household to still function and live.

DS6 still off school with stomach upset and wont be returning this week so now have the fun of keeping him occupied and trying to get him to do some learning tasks before he falls even further behind!

I think there's a lot of misconception about the smell of fish because apart from smoked fish which will obviously have a smokey flavour, fish that is fit to eat shouldn't have a particularly fishy smell, and if it did, I wouldn't buy it. Smoked haddock, for example, will obviously have a stronger smell than unsmoked haddock, which if it's fresh, shouldn't have much of a smell at all. I'd be very wary of buying whoopsied fresh unsmoked fish. Smoked fish is actually preserved by the smoking process so probably has more leeway to its supermarket shelf life. but I'd actually still take the wrapping off it and "have a sniff" before buying it. The nose is a very good indicator of freshness.

I'm sitting here waiting for 12.30 to switch on the TV and hear the Spending Review announcements. In one way it feels as if my parents must have felt in September 1939 waiting for the announcement that War was about to break out. But I feel we must have a sense of perspective. No bombs are about to be dropped on our citizens and our cities, a national blackout is not going to happen, rationing is not about to be imposed (except by what we ourselves can afford to buy), and our loved ones are not about to be conscripted into the armed forces and sent away from home. So "yes", it IS going to be tough, especially for those who lose their jobs over the next four years but hopefully many elements of our daily routines will still carry on as normal. Those of us who are used to living a frugal life are probably about to be thankful for those disciplines. I'm looking out of the window at a blue sky and sunshine, despite the chill wind, and hope that in the economic times ahead we'll all be able to concentrate on the blue skies further down the road when the national debt is under control again and things have improved, rather than being overwhelmed by the chill economic wind. Fingers crossed!
