How much for removals?

I moved in August and after ringing round a few companies decided to hire a luton van with a tail lift (3.5 ton) from Burnt Tree Vehicle Hire. They do a special w/e rate whereby you pick the van up at 11am saturday morning and return it first thing monday morning and it costs the same as a normal 24 hour rate.
I passed my test in 93, so put me and dad on the insurance, paid the extra to lower the excess and total cost was still less than £100, and it worked out well for me as it was Bank Holiday w/e so had it for 3 days :j I then roped in mum, 3 male cousins, 1 uncle and male friend to help do the moving
Only thing to think about is the distance between the 2 houses and how much help you'll have because you also have to refill the van with diesel when you return it.
For us it was only 20 mile round trip to where I had 20ft container's worth of furniture stored and it was all moved in 3 trips, total time 4 hours on the saturday because we had a lot of hands to help. I needed the van all w/e to move the things we'd been storing at parents and nan's for 5 years  , and to dispose of rubbish. We'll prob have found a house to buy before I finish unpacking here

If you want to compare the size of quotes, try and estimate cubic footage being used. I think https://www.helpiammoving.com has links to this...
Also factor in:
1) What floors you are moving from (eg in our case a 3/4th floor flat with no lift).
2) If they are going to pack etc.
3) What they will dismantle and reassemble
4) Other hidden costs such as charge for extra boxes etc.
5) Enviro factors - nice to use people who reuse boxes, I think.
6) How professional they felt when they visited (if they did).
7) Whether they indicated a willingness to negotiate.
8) Whether you are moving on a weekday or friday/sat
For us., approx 1300 cubic foot moving from 3/4th floor flat in London, W9 to London N1, including packing. Quotes varied between £1100 to £2700!0 -
crikey hander  thats unbelievable costs
Im starting to dig around for quotes at the mo we wont be going as far as you ( staying in east london- probably no further than the next postcode)
If they quote me those sorts of prices, Im off! Should only be half a days work, all being well. Hoping to leave quite a bit of furniture IYSWIM as buyer wants a lot of it
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
We've moved many times, before we had kids we always hired a van and got a couple of mates to help out on the day, but despite having very little furniture it always took a whole day and was very tiring and stressfull, so wouldn't do it again on our own.
With the last two moves we have hired removal men, last year moved from a one bedroom 3rd floor flat to a two bedroom ground floor flat, both in SW London, and paid £250.
Now moving from the same groundfloor flat to a terraced three bedroom house 15 minutes away and the cheapest quote I have managed to get is £375. Still think it's reasonable, considering that we have lots more furniture now. I did call about 25 removal companies, all varied greatly in price and services (some happy to give a quote over the phone without asking too many questions, some came round to see how much stuff we have and gave a quote based on that, more reliable that way I think).
It pays to call as many removal companies as possible. Our quotes varied from 375 to 800 pounds.0 -
quoted to stop this being edited out at some point so abuse can see you have a removal company
No, get your facts right, as I have already informed you I used to manage a company some years ago, not own one!. I once worked for BT and before that Salisbury's and now Dell, does this mean I own a telecoms company, a supermarket, and a computer manufacturer??
Can I not have a past?0
