How much for removals?

  • Just had 2 quotes from removal companies, moving 15 miles, 3 bed house.
    1st was for £535, second for £1068!!! Yes £1068.
The second was a recommendation, which we will not be using, but shop around. Also, check the small rpint about waiting times if there are delays on the moving date. These can be up to £60-75 per hour depending on their conditions.
Check that the companies you get to quote are with the BAR British Association of Removers.

Hiya, i think i may just do this, i have a 2 bed house but not much furniture. Do you need an HGV licence to drive a 7.5 ton? dont want to get a luton and it be too small! xx

Take a look at your drivers licence, if you have Category C1, then you have this entitlement already so can drive a 7.5 vehicle.

If you passed your Category B test (Car Test) after 31st January 1997 then you WONT have been given this on your drivers licence....BUT
if you passed your test BEFORE 31st January 1997 then you will have automatically been given this entitlement!!

Good Luck!! Make sure you get a tail lift - - so much easier...honestly!

Why don't you get a 'man and van'. You get the van, and a helping pair of hands for the heavy stuff. A lot of people advertise cash in hand stuff. We paid £35 an hour in London. If you sit back and watch it will cost you more as it takes longer. You really have to chip in and do a lot of the work yourself. We looked at hiring a van for a day on a Saturday, and as all local truck renatl places close at 12 around here, we would of had to hire one for 3 days and it would have cost over £200. It took us 2 and half hours and cost us £90 plus we had the extra help. Of course, if somebody owned a lot of valuable furniture it would not be insured.

I am waiting for people to have a go at me for hiring somebody for cash when there are so many people out there trying to run honest businesses. I don't care, I pay income tax, I paid over £2000 stamp duty, I really wasn't interested in paying vat on the removals as well!

If I recalled correctly, my licence was issued in 2004

We moved last year from Dartford to West Sussex from a flat to house and paid Burns Removal Services 522 pounds. We are now moving 50 miles back to Essex and are using the same company but it is now 622 because we have a bit more stuff and it is further.

We were very happy with their services and wanted to use them again and they were happy to travel.

Depends on how much stuff you have really. I thought of all the money I spend - estate agents- solicitors- stamp duty etc - I din't begrudge the removal men - I hate lugging stuff about.

My silly ex husband ( whome we are buying out ) has 10 times the stuff we have and is getting a man and a van - I don't envy him !!:rotfl:

An aunt moved from Streatham (South London) to Worthing (Nr. Brighton), and ınstructed Pickfords.
contents of a 2 bedroomed flat and they charged her 1600 pounds!!!!, though when i phoned to enquire about the costing they quoted the data protection act and refused to discuss with me
  • Cannot recommend Pickfords - we had a 'company move' from Essex to Wiltshire, with an overnight 'stop'. Both times they used staff from an Agency, rather than their own uniformed employees that they tell you about in their marketing spiel!!! I'm very glad we didn't pay.

If you have a bit of spare cash I would definately recommend getting quotes for a move with packing done for you - we've had it done on three moves by three different companies, it is wonderful! (Pickfords were the worst and very stressful though, a small company in Derby being the best.)
