Travel to New York

I want to book a short stay in NY but as a package for the ATOL etc. covers BUT I want to specify the hotel and none of the likes of Virgin use my preferred hotel. Is such a thing possible, maybe I need an independent travel agent, any thoughts?:)

A travel agent is unlikely to be able to put together an individually tailored package per se, it will be flight + hotel. TBH I don't see the problem with booking each element separately, with adequate insurance you should not have a problem.

Which hotel is it? Is there a specific reason why you only want this hotel?

Thanks for that. I just tried the holiday hypermarket online and they specified that it would be separate bookings. We're after the Paramount or The French Quarters specially. I thought the ABTA, ATOL, IATA covers were only good for packaged holidays which are better to have than mere insurance for bankruptcies and dust clouds etc. Any further thoughts?:)

  • I booked a trip to new York for November last year with flight centre. I booked a virgin flight in the sale and then a little later when I could afford it I booked my hotel through them - the prices matched what I would of paid had I done each bit separately.

You really don't need the cover.
Unless you think any of the major airlines that fly that route is going to go bust it can be quite safely done and much cheaper without a package.

Nobjocki, its not just about an airline going bust. for example, they may pull the route, cancel the flight, have another episode of the volcanic ash cloud, major snowfall. If the outward flight is cancelled, by booking a 'non package' you will more than likely still be liable for your hotel cost, where with a 'package', this will be covered.

I think those who have been affected by cancellations have found ABTA etc incredibly slow and pretty unhelpful.

Is there any reason why you want those two hotels in particular? There are many other good (and in the case of the Paramount, better) hotels in NYC.

Hotels in New York can be cancelled at 24 hours notice , routes to New York are never pulled as they're among the most lucrative, heavy snowfall rarely blocks airports on the Eastern seaboard for very long, I can't recall the last time a transatlantic airline went bust, volcanic ash is an extremely rare occurrence.

Anyone who feels the need to book a package to New York is timid and rather foolish as it will end up costing them much more than they will ever lose.

Just done a quick search on Expedia.co.uk. (Search LON-NYC flight + hotel deals then specify "Paramount hotel"). Using random dates I get (for 2 people, 2 nights)

    Capture.jpg

    Booked separately: £2952
    Trip Savings: - £1619
Total Price: £1333, £667 per person

As others have said, a package for a trip to NY is a waste of time. Insurance, on the other hand, is essential.
