Only because the realists can see what a mess the optimists are making of everything. The optimist will live and spend for today, as "something will turn up tomorrow" to pay for it.

I think we need a few of those optimists, now what was that valid quote from St Augustine?
'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher

Trouble is the pessimists seem to end up having to bail out the optimists.

I'm pretty much as optimistic as they come, but I plan carefully, don't spend money like it's going out of fashion and am pretty sensible financially.

I therefore think you can be completely optimistic in your outlook and still be sensible in areas of your life.

I honestly have not heard it before and have just made it up.

so it's sort of my quote.

    cool

Very lyrical :) reminiscent of Yusef Islam.
Look at me, I am old but I am happy

24 pages in the space of about 12 hours. You gotta love this board. ;)

Imagine the thousands of pages we'd spew out if something important actually happened.

I can't be bothered to read through them, so would some kind soul just be able to let me know if Hamish has said that this is somehow a very good thing for rising house prices?

I was just reading a commentary by an emminent City fund manager. Who described the approach of the US, UK and Japanese governments to their respective financial structural problems. As akin to crew members moving deck chairs around on the Titanic. Put matters of the day in context.

    I saw that.

They agree with Hamish, a blip, it seems.

I thought he said it could be a dip then went on to say house prices in Sheffield have been dropping all year

No way of of predicting public sentiment but I agree with others like Graham that it seems unlikely people are going to keep putting their house on the market then taking it off when prices fall and then putting back on when they think prices are rising. There were other reasons for prices rising in 2009 dramatic fall in rates meaning savers had to make money somehow and stamp duty. All we have to look forward to now is cuts and more cuts.

I suspect though we will see between now and the end of the year how many people are serious about selling and how many are not. Still record numbers of property available in my area and 50% more than what was available around this time last year.

I bet a lot of people will just leave their house on at the same price and ignore low offers.

Phew, well that was easy, although wife is a bit upset. Just phoned estate agent and got him to knock 7.2% off the price we are selling at. 7.2%? Well that's for this month and next, after all we are nearly half way through this month. Got to try and get ahead of the game, we are still paying an interest only Paragon mortgage on this place at 9%. Maybe we'll get a punter once the change goes up on Rightmove.

I know what you will say - postcode? Ah well, we don't get a lot of post in these parts, not so much call for any printed material really. I'll give you a clue of sorts.

    Hootenanny.
