looking for a netbook or cheapish laptop

We have a geriatric monstrous PC at home but as my hubby has just started uni he has brought a laptop which will cover all our photo editing, downloads, etc. He'll be taking it with him everyday to uni and I'd really like to have something at home to use.

I'm thinking of a netbook as I only use the web for emails mse facebook and internet banking etc. I do like to play card games and do some word processing and listen to music too (don't mind getting speakers if need be. Also I don't mind the size.

So does anyone have any suggestions on a laptop or netbook which has reasonable speed etc for under £150 preferably or what I should be looking for to cover my needs?

Huge thanks!

just out of interest why cant you use the PC at home whilst he has the laptop at uni? or are you just after something you can sit on the sofa with and casually browse whilst watching TV?

on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)
  • I bought a Netbook from Novatech a month or two ago for £150 but I see that they no longer offer that configuration.
As a new user a can't give you the link :( but google novatech and look for their X10 netbook but it is much more expensive now (£220).
One thing to remember is that you can save a reasonable sum by chosing a machine with no operating system and installing it yourself.
  • You should be able to pick up a decent netbook or laptop on ebay for around £150.

Check out the sellers feedback and there's quite a few dodgy ones out there who buy, do up and sell on.

I've owned a few in the past including Samsung, Asus and MSI - all good little netbooks, perform well and good battery :)
  • Gonzo - apart from being seriously ancient and well past its sell by date, we have got quite a small living room and with 2 children now it seems even smaller lol!Amazing how much space a small baby takes up!For the amount of time I spend on the pc it just doesn't seem worth the space it takes up. Would rather have room for a dining table to eat with the littlies!

Thanks for your replies everyone, will go and have a look at the novatech ones now. Just out of interest, what should I be looking for in a netbook for the money I wish to spend with regards to speed and space (not very good at terms!)?

    thanks again!

would you accept a refurb or second hand system as by doing so you could open up other options

  • Gonzo - the laptop my hubby has just bought is refurbished so yes, I would prefer to have some guarantee with it if possible though.
