Please, please report it to the RSPCA - & don't let them try to fob you off - be really determined. If you don't, it will always be lurking at the back of your mind. (I speak from personal experience - I let one of the (very abrupt & dismissive) staff at the rspca call centre basically make me feel as if I was making a fuss about nothing & wasting her time when I rang to report cruelty/negligence to a kitten - she wouldn't report it and the kitten actually died a few weeks later - its haunted me ever since & I swore that I'd never be fobbed off like that again!). Its a shame that she hasn't told you directly that she wants rid of the poor dog as you could then offer to help her to find another home for him. He sounds like a lovely dog!
  • Alyth is in Scotland, it would be the SSPCA who would help. Hope he's OK and warming his slippers by your fire now, Alyth. x

    Hi Alyth,
Whats the latest with the old guy? I PM'd you lastnite after reading this thread to offer my help as i live not far from Alyth and would happily offer this dog a cozy comfy new home for his last few years if you are unable to take him. It broke my heart reading this story and i cried everytime i looked at my own dog and imagined her living that way.

Hope to hear an update soon

What a star. I think Alyth has a few things going on right now so I'm not sure how often she comes on the site. Fingers crossed it's not too long though.

Apologies for not updating, I have had a few problems of my own.

The situation at the moment is that another friend who was outraged by the dog owner has had a word and threatened that we will take the dog away from her if she doesn't look after him properly. So we know that she's walking him (when she's at home). my situation is that she's now taken to emailing me perhaps once/twice a week saying that she is going away, can I look after the dog that day.

This is putting huge pressure on me - I came home today to find two bottles of wine and a note from her asking me to look after him for four days next week which I just can't do - work and uni pressure means I have a friend to look after my dog one day a week.

Of course we don't know exactly how often she is going away - I work erratic hours and have uni classes. I try and look at her house when I'm going back and forward but it's not always easy as she had a very long drive. The normal postie is on holiday this week but he's been keeping me updated on whether she's at home or not.

The dog himself is okay - I had him on Tuesday and he's a happy pup - when I'm there at least. I truly can't take him, I made myself very ill over the dog and a few other things over the last couple of weeks. I know somone has pm'd me, I haven't had a chance to read it properly but I do have to say that I don't live in Alyth or anywhere near it, I picked the name because of the singer.

So the owner knows that she is under threat of having the dog at least reported, but of course is taking absolute advantage of me in knowing that I won't let him be on his own when she is away. God only knows what else I can do to be honest, apart from reporting her/trying to get him rehomed, and I can't do that at the moment. At least when she's away I know that I can do the best I can for him.

Apologies again for not updating, I've had a few personal issues to deal with and of course have been running my free petsitting service for the neighbour and worryng myself stupid about the dog.

Alyth, don't make yourself ill sweetie. Maybe your part in this old fella's story is to find him a good forever home, not necessarily to be that home. Nerak has offered to take him in, and from what you've written that could be welcome news to his current owner. Scotland is not such a big place even if you don't live near Nerak - maybe you could put owner and Nerak in touch with each other? Then it's a matter of arranging transport; if owner is that keen to be rid of the responsibility of her old dog it is not unreasonable to expect her to put a little effort into taking him to Nerak's loving home where he can live out his days in comfort.

I would concentrate on sorting out the problem rather than agonising over whether to report owner and shift responsibility to the SSPCA who may well not be able to help anyway.

Alyth, this is the best option for everyone, including you.

Dog gets to be happy all the time, not just certain times of the week.

Owner gets to relinquish responsibility for a dog she clearly isn't able to look after properly.

You no longer get dumped on or have to worry about the poor animal.

A short time spent talking to the owner and Nerak would solve all the problems in a short space of time. One less thing for you to worry about once it's dealt with.

I read your other thread so I know what you're going through and realise you have a lot going on with you right now, but maybe Nerak's offer is as much help for you, as it is for the dog. One stress off your plate to deal with?

  • contact the rspca or take it in yourself - a dog that old should be loved and looked after

    Hey again,

As Frosti said, Scotland isn't too big, so even if it requires travel i have a car and would happily pick him up. I realise it's not quite that simple in real life and you already have so much going on in your own life. i PM'd you my private mail so even if you passed on to the owner she may consider giving him up.

I done an HNC in animal care a few years back, and it toughened me up to an extent when it comes to my emotions and animals.....but this has got to me so much. I won't pressure you, but you have my details if you need me when all settles down for you :-)

I understand you feel for the dg but ... does she realised how much a dog care would have costed her? Way more than a bottle or two of wine....

Pls consider Nerak' s offer and discuss giving up the dog with the current owner...
