Dog needs £3000 operation

I have a 3 years old dog and has now been diagnosed with hip displacia after being seen by vets and specialists. The problem I have is that all the diagnosing has used up the insurance money.
He now needs an operation, which is going to cost £3000, and there is no way I can borrow the money. He is a lovely dog and I want to save him, but does anyone know how I can get help to help pay for his operation. Thanks.

Where abouts are you calder? With the name I am gussing at West Yorks? If so give the dogs trust a ring, the one at Leeds. They night be able to help, and if not put you in contact with some one that might.

Could you ask your Vet if you can pay weekly? ANd is your insurance a one off pot or does it renew its self ( the pot, evey year) Like petplan?

Are you on any benefits or a low income?

Why has the insurance been used up just on the diagnoising and not the treatment, that sounds odd.

Oh, it may be "per conditin" type of insurance? So sorry to hear that...

My Zara is insured up to 12000 per year, exactly for that reason, she is a GS and prone to hips problems in the future as such....

Hope you can sort this out.. for your dog

Can you get a second job and use the wages from that to pay the vet in instalments?
Be happy, it's the greatest wealth :)
  • Thanks for your replies. It is a one off pot, my dog has had xrays, tablets, seen specialists , stayed in specialist hospital for a few days at a time, it has eaten the insurance. I'm not on benefits, would I still be able to receive help off dog's trust ? I am a young girl, working and studying at university.

    Hi

My rescue dog was diagnosed with hip dysplasia at 2 years old and is now 6 years old and the vet said he could have an operation but it wasn't essential so i made the decision to leave well alone and his quality of life hasnt been effected greatly, he still enjoys walks etc - I did not want to put him through a major op but I suppose it depends how badly this condition is effecting your dog.

We manage it by keeping an eye on his weight and giving him cortaflex supplements and taking him to hydrotherapy.

Have you tried the PDSA for help?

I'm not aware that the Dogs Trust will help with this kind of thing.

The PDSA only help if you are on Housing or Council Tax benefits.

It may however be worth an approach to this small charity. http://www.tailwaggersclubtrust.com/

The Blue Cross also offers help to those on means tested benefits or "low incomes" if you have one in your area http://www.bluecross.org.uk/web/site/AboutUs/Veterinary/VetIntroduction.asp

Whilst you await an operation has he had pain management (eg medication), tried hydrotherapy etc already?

    Good luck.
  • Thanks for your replies. My dog has had pain management, but he is limping badly everytime he gets up , after laying down. He has good and bad days, I don't want to see him in pain, he is only 3 years old and a lovely dog, I don't know a way to pay for his operation. Thanks

I don't know how much you were insured for but it appears that an awful lot has ben spent on diagnosis-mine has same diagnosis HD plus arthritis lower back(older dog) and that was based on x-rays alone. Is on medication and will be for life(prescription and online ordering keeps those costs down)
I hope you get a favourable outcome from somewhere/one
  • Thanks Devildog . The insurance limit was 2500, and my dog has been to the vets and specialist several times in the past 5 months. They were going to operate on him at the beginning of August, but after having him stay at the surgery for 2 days, they decided that he didn't need the operation. They prescribed tremadol , he didnt limp for a few weeks, but then he started limping very badly. Took him back and now they say he does need the operation after all. This has what has eaten the Insurance away. I have to make a decision on whether I will be able to find the funds, by early next week. Thank you all again, for trying to help us.
