deleting all the .pf files in the c:\windows\prefetch folder will also improve boot and system speed.

Windows 7 will rebuild them as you delete so its not something worth bothering with except on an occasional basis if even that .

  • the prefetch folder fills up with files for every program / application that you or the system starts, even if that program is only used once. Each time windows boots it processes the prefetch folder, preloading these files so that the program starts faster. But doing this it preloads all of the one off programs, such as installers, updates etc... Yes windows does rebuild the files when you start each program / application, but you benefit because it only rebuilds the files for programs you actually use.

Desktop = Phenom X4 plus 6gb 1066mhz RAM. Win64 boots at 12 seconds most of which is the BIOS and Zenwalk linux (which is only 32bits) under 10 seconds which is mostly BIOS.

    Phenom X4 2.8
    4GB DDR3
    1TB 64MB HDD

Takes about 30s-1min overall, but I password it so me counting goes towards that and I have quite a lot of programs run on startup.

Ever consider running Winpatrol or Startup Delayer? That way you speed up the boot time whilst still running all your programs.

Not really bothered. I have a routine. Get out of bed. Turn PC on. Go for a pee. Come back, type password in. Go have a shower. Come back everythings loaded :D

During that time I managed to shower and get dressed while watching it boot!

Perhaps having it in the shower was exacerbating the problem?

Reality clean prefetch folder 5pm 143 files 27.5 mb

now one hour 30 mins later 128 files 18 mb

I prefer the advice of the Windows Client Performance Team in regards to cleaning the prefetch folder .
<its a myth dont do it as its self cleaning and defeats the object of prefetching > .
But each to its own cleaning the prefetch folder can not break your computer .

    Sony Vaio FW31J
    Core 2 duo T6400 @2GHZ clock
    256mb dedicated graphics
    4ggb DDR2 RAM
    400gbHDD

    Windows 7 = 52 seconds
    Kubuntu 9.10 = 41 seconds

The above are including having to select which one to boot too and are from pushing on too when clicking the start button works if that makes sense.

Quite proud of that as its only modest spec, just like keeping it clean.
    Back by no demand whatsoever.
