iphone sms delivery reports

Can anyone give me an idiot's guide on how to get delivery reports when you send a text on an iphone. I've been given the phone and it's fab but I really badly miss this feature which isn't a standard one with iphones. I've googled for ever and found 2 main ways round it, one is to enter a code, in my case RCT as I'm on Orange, however this doesn't work and seems prehistoric anyway, I'm sure I remember doing that when I got my first mobile a million years ago.

The other is by using something called Cydia, and I've watched a video about how to do that, however I don't have cydia on my phone and have no idea what to do or how to get it or even if it's ok to download it.

Can someone advise please. Thank you. It really needs to be a very simple explanation - I'm so simple I had been so looking forward to downloading all these apps you read about, and have now discovered that most have to be paid for - I thought they'd all be free, provided by apple. Oh well, told you I was an innocent!

There are various SMS apps which supposedly provide delivery reports, but bear in mind that delivery reports are often utterly useless. I've sent texts to phones that I know weren't switched on, yet have had confirmed delivery reports. When Orange started charging for delivery reports a while ago I remember being told by several customer service people that they were useless too.

Obviously, things might have improved since then though.

Thank you. I've had delivery reports on every phone I've had over the past 10 - 12yrs and all have seemed pretty reliable. It's just a shame it isn't also a standard feature on iphones. Hopefully someone can help me understand this cydia business

Delivery Reports are useless cross-network. All it tells you is that the remote SMSC has accepted the message, not that the recipient actually got it. That's caught me out so many times.

I could be wrong but I don't think the iPhone supports this feature.

To install Cydia you'll need to jailbreak your phone (google jailbreak, and whatever model/iOS your phone is for more information on this). I've done it a few times on my 3G in the past, it's pretty straightforward but I'm quite used to hacking into phone software. I'm quite happy running the stock iOS4.1 at the moment, so I can't help you with the latest info sorry. Just google your iOS/model and 'jailbreak' and read up on everything. I believe it's quite difficult to 'brick' an iPhone thanks to iTunes' restore option, so just have a go! Best of luck.

SMS doesn't get passed SMSC to SMSC. It gets sent SMSC to recipient. On Nokia s40 phones you can see the SMSC.

I find delivery reports reliable in that if it comes back 'delivered' it has been. Sometimes I don't get a delivery report, but the message still reaches the recipient.

No you're not wrong, as I said in my first post. However there are several workarounds, one of which is to insert the letters RCT in the case of orange at the beginning of each text, and another is to use this cydia thing, which is what i want to find out about.

I know I mentioned it earlier, but you do know that Orange charge for delivery reports right? Total rip-off. Only 0.9p per text, but it all adds up over a month. As I also said earlier (and as LeeSouthEast said) they are totally unreliable too, cross-network or same network. I had 'tested' this out by being in the same room as people I've sent texts to.

Yes I know, thank you but I have used them for years and they're reliable enough for me and I'm used to paying for them. I just want to know the best way to get them on the iphone.
