I checked the week prior to us going and they are £90 p/p single, hope they come down. I saw £150 on am advance booking site.

They WILL come down. The week prior is still too soon.

Advance booking site?? You can't book that far ahead - it's a con.

The three TOCs in this particular mix are South West Trains, CrossCountry and Arriva Trains Wales. As mentioned on another journey (above) where multi-TOCs are involved all reservable legs must become available (which a certain retailer's email alert system could not cope with).

South West Trains do not offer quota controlled tickets on their leg for this journey so you could set up an email alert "splitting" at Birmingham New Street and when the last applicable email comes through the journey should be available to book as an advance.

Or take a look at http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/ticket_types/44703.aspx and when both CrossCountry and Arriva Trains Wales are taking bookings for your dates you will be OK to book.

At the moment they are both in sync up to Sunday 15 June only.

So just to take that further, when I tried Thursday 12 June, I got the £28.50 and £45 fares dzug1 mentioned and Thursday 19 June offers the £98.50 full fat fare at the moment.

Under 5's travel free. As a rough rule of thumb for Birmingham to London, Virgin Trains is the fastest but most expensive, London Midland & Chiltern offer cheaper, but slower options.

Chiltern offer family tickets from their booking offices (Birmingham Moor Street in this case to London Marylebone) which are not available online:
    http://www.chilternrailways.co.uk/tickets-and-times/familyticket
I believe there is a Family Travelcard (includes tube and bus travel in London) available. Probably worth phoning them to check prices and availability (other posters on here may be able to help too), but I think their phone lines are down at the moment.

London Midland are offering 25% off tickets booked via the link on this page:
    http://www.londonmidland.com/days-out-and-offers/attractions-and-offers/rail-sale/
By playing with your dates/times I could get advance tickets (booked trains only, tube/bus not included) for £13.50 total, but returning at times not that suitable for young children (New Street to London Euston) and its a relatively slow journey at approx 2 hours 15 minutes.

I've emailed and called them for a copy of the form but they just divert me to the same link on the website that doesnt work!! Anyone else having the same proble?

    Hi All

I am looking to travel to Preston on Friday 16/5 , returning on Sun.
The cheapest tickets I can find are £89+.

Can anyone help find anything cheaper?

    Thank you.

If you leave Bexley late in the day then you can do it for £67 at 1925 or £80.50 at 1855

Advance singles for complete journey including tube transfer

Earlier the £89.70 off peak return is the best you'll do

Any rail site should sell them or you can get the off peak return on the day

    Hi

Thanks for the reply - appreciate it.

It's frustrating. I've found tickets to Birmingham / Manchester are literally for few pounds. Thought Preston would've been similar.
