real proplems virus trojans..etc etc etc

I've got real problems with pop ups, gambling, love/ horosope, movies.(the movie site comes up as a large brown box moviepass.tv promotes a 3 day free music trial your supposed to have signed upto will not go away until you pay them money......so they say, it doesn't sown on the info bar to right click and close either..........HELP HELP

Used lots of useful info but still seem to have a problem does anyone have any suggestions. Ive scanned with AVG virus cleaner it found Trogan Horse Downloader.Agent.D7R and deleted it. pop ups still happen. This scan checked 51299 objects and took 44 mins is this normal?
Scanned using AVIRA- anti Vir found Trogan Horse TR/Agent.QG.4 but won't quarantine or delete it. this seems to keep the popups away but this provides its own popup screen telling you what its found?

Also looked at Sysinfo.org and checked on startup list for anthing untoward but couldn't see anything I should halt on startup but there was 21 things working on startup.....is this normal? and how do I tell if I really need them, is there a site that I could search for the names of the startup items?

any ideas solutions to a novice victim...

Download and install "SpyBot Search and Destroy" and "AVG AntiVirus"....both are free...

sure the links are in a sticky on this forum, I will dig them out if not:

Sysinfo has a list here telling you what to keep:

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

Use this to find out what is running at startup:

download ewido, & adaware - you really need as much help as possible.

Ensure that you do the updates on all the anti-spyware stuff, then reboot into SAFE mode (generally pressing F8 when booting up) & run ALL of the one after another.

Thanks Browntoa read this but it refers to win XP I'm still on 2000 not sure if I should do it?
Can I should I download XP Service Pack 1a or is that just if you've got XP already?

One of my programs currently does an automated backup to the hard drive do I need to copy this, as the PC hasn't got a CD R only a floppy.....

Should I copy other files to floppy or is easier quicker to do a backup. any instructions for this on the techi site anywhere?????

I'm being paranoid about transferring all these nasties to a copy or backup file as well. Will this happen.

Thanks to alanrowell for your comments I'm not sure what safe mode actually does, I have seen it when pressing F8 but I don't like doing stuff if I don't understand what it's doing. anychance you can explain or where can I read about it.

ta everso for EVERONE'S help yep i've got a real problem one registry scan gave me 5,237 objects..... so I'v banned the internet and computor use and just using internet at work. I'll let you know if it works....when I'm confident enough to do probably next week.........

2000 has more service packs, because it is older, you should get sp4 installed if you goto https://www.windowsupdate.com
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Well here goes going to try later to start to copy info........and follow thread instructions

I take it I don't have to look for service packs ? (not really sure what they are?) or install SP4
