    Hi,

I would go through the bags of 'retro' clothes you have found on the plot. If they are really from the 70's or something and in good nick, you might be able to sell them on and buy some bits for your plot from the proceeds. Obviously, just chuck them if they are rags.
  • dogstarheaven - I think I would be inclined to call the Council, maybe on the grounds that the Rubbish is a health hazard or environmental issue - if you don't ask you won't know, it's worth a try. Good Luck whatever happens.

  • thanks for your advice, scotsaver. i've just rung the council and they've agreed to supply me with a skip as long as everything's been put on the inside of my gate and they'll have some guys help me pick it up...

Oh well, maybe not then.:rotfl: Good luck with the plot. x
  • Regarding your Japanese Knotweed - I've seen someone on here talking about ammonium sulphamide - you can buy it on ebay and it's really bad for plants. They can't sell it as a weedkiller but were you to buy it and apply it to your knotweed it might have a deleterious effect!;)

Hi Everyone. I'm a proud new allotment holder! Had it for around 4 weeks now, its quite overgrown, and we've managed to dig over about a quarter of it. Its hardly stopped raining here for the past 2 weeks, which makes the digging hard going. I'm hoping to start marking out some beds in the next few days, for garlic/onion/shallots, and early potatoes. Probably a stupid question, but do I need to work some kind of compost into the soil before I plant? There's not a compost on the plot, so i'm going to have to buy bags of something from the garden centre.
    Thanks
    Sarah
  • I don't normally add anything to the soil that wasn't previously cultivated. When I planted out my fruit trees and rhubarb recently, I just added Blood, Fish and Bonemeal to the soil. Then during the growing season, I'll then add Growmore, and then diluted comfrey tea each watering session. From next year, I'll have a sufficient supply of homemade compost to use as a top dressing (fertiliser) for my plants.

Hi oligeo - congrats on the new Allotment, now the fun begins.;) I've only had my plot for just over a year and when I started digging over last year I did add in a few bags of Manure, only because I saw other plot holders doing the same at that time. I've also added in a few more bags this year, I'm working on the basis that you get back put you put in. As I've now got my Composters working on the Plot, I'm hoping that I can use these in the future rather than keep buying Manure/compost.
