but then p&p on ebay isn't strictly p&p is it. It can be a way od paying less in fees to ebay for selling.
And if you agree to the overall price when bidding then you can't really complain. If the final combined price is ok for you why does it matter.
And if you don't look at the p&p when bidding then you should start.
This seems like a complaint about nothing really!

I
You yourself complain about one of your competitors offering free postage as you can't afford to, but at the same time, you appear to be advising/telling other sellers to keep their postage as low as poss. I can understand why the issue makes you nervous (I think eBay can be very anti-seller) but I don't see that someone charging a bit more for postage is really such a big deal. Looking at it another way, if by paying a smidge more, you help that person to stay in business, might that not be a good thing? Or should everything be done according to who can do it cheapest?
If I am selling on my private account it doesn't really matter. However on my business account then yes, another competitor undercutting my postage or going to free p and p can affect my sales.
I work on margins, I understand the ebay and paypal fee structure and i know what my base line selling price must be to make a decent profit. If that profit starts to erode to a point where I feel it is not worth selling something to end up with a couple of pounds, then i move on.
Pricing on ebay is always a game, you cannot just stand still and keep things exactly the same all the time. I am always aware of what other sellers are doing, how it affects my sales and my stars. In some categories you would struggle to sell with any p and p showing, in other categories it doesn't matter at all, but next month that could all switch about.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Where people's opinions are important is when they are paying for something. So no, I disagree, I think you're indulging in ostrich-like behaviour.
Customers are usually right. If they're unhappy, and from a lot of these threads they are unhappy with sellers who overcharge, there's no use going "la la la la, can't here you".
Either the overchargers go out of business because other people undercut them or they go out of business because they get such bad feedback they get suspended. No-one who actually listens to their buyers suffers from this problem."Well, it's election year, Bill, we'd rather people didn't exercise common sense..." - Jed Bartlet, The West Wing, season 4

I will agree that customers who are unhappy with sellers who overcharge will vote with their cash or feedback etc. Obviously the likes of myself doesn`t worry them overmuch....I have been selling on Ebay for a few years now and am still selling, and have 100% feedback and excellent DSR. And there are others like me, who will try to recoup some of the extra cost of posting, and who also make a good living by selling on Ebay. I believe it`s because we are upfront and honest in the ads and say exactly what our p and p charges are about. And because they aren`t outrageous, the buyers certainly seem fine with them.
I for one am certainly not sitting here going "la la la, can`t hear you"....;)"Ignore the eejits...it saves your blood pressure and drives `em nuts!"0 -
When I buy something off ebay I don't think the price is £XXX then I have to pay postage, I add the price and postage together and think this is the price. I always leave five stars for post costs even if over charged because I have factored that into my cost for the item, and as a seller I think this poor sod is trying to lessen his ebay fees, which are ridiculous when it is so hard to make a living as it is.
Personally the only important stars to me when buying are 'item as described'.
I've started doing free post now and just adding it to the cost of my item as it cuts this dsr out the equation for me. But in the end it's just making more money for ebay and costing the customer more.0 -

Packaging isn't free!
Nor does it cost over £3 for a black sack & sellotape in the case of the OP.0 -
I sell on Ebay and charge the minimum amount in fact sometimes undercharge. I have offered a refund for one item I post to someone as I felt guilty at over charging by £1.50. I weight the item and estimate the packaging. If I have bought something that has been overcharged I do respond via the feedback. If I was totally overcharged by £3.00 then I would contact the seller and request a refund.
Finally if I view a seller who is asking for a high postage charge I avoid.0
